Partition backup cannot be restored to the same partition I took the backup from

Thread needs solution

I took a backup of 2 partitions C: and D:, When I went to restore using windows GUI, ATIH 2012 complained not enough storage to restore. Size of the C drive partition was 125GB. Amount of data it had when backed up ~100GB. (Chat based Tech support told me ATIH don't detect the disk size properly and asked me to use boot CD based restore, which I did see below.)

I went ahead and used the CD based restore. I selected source and destination correctly and went ahead to start the restore. Restore started, delected my C Drive, and did not complete the next step, which is start of restoring the data. Now my computer do not boot, restore don't work. Most important part of a backup software is being able to restore. What can I do at this stage to finish a successful restore. Do you need more information to help me out ?

Here is few more details

  • My disk is 1TB,
  • C drive was 125GB (I have a backup)
  • D drive was 200GB (I have a backup)
  • J drive was around 500GB (I don't have a backup for this)
  • There was also a system-restore partition created during windows install (I have a backup for this)
  • There was unused space where I did not had a partition as well.

Current state ;

  • C drive partition deleted by ATIH when it did not start the restore process.
  • Other partions still seems to exist on the drive
  • Computer cannot be booted (No more C drive partion to boot, deleted by ATIH )

Any help appreciated.

Are you positive that you selected the right destination? ATI on the CD shows you drive letters that can be different from windows. For example, the recovery CD can assign the letter C:\ to the system reserved partition (a partition that windows doesn't assign any letter to), while it assigns the letter D: to the system partition (a partition that is typically the C:\ partition under Windows).
When using the CD, the drive letters can be different when you select a backup, or when you select a destination. Typically drive letters are correct when you look at what to restore within a backup.
Double check the partition labels.

Validate the backup of your C:\ partition with the recovery CD. If this works, the restoration of C:\ should work. If it doesn't, contact Acronis support. Support for recovery is free.

Yes my partition selection is good and accurate. (I have done restores before and I am aware of drive letter changes when I boot from CD, I am going by the disk name and partition sizes to select the right destination.)

Support seems to be asking $9.99 per incident. How to bypass that and call support if restore support is free.

Samy,

Which version of Windows and which build of 2012

If the partition was simply deleted and has unallocated space, you should be able to restore your backup of that partition.

Check this link. Item #3 should do the job or item #1 should also work just restoring the system partition.

http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618

Use the TrueImage bootable media Rescue CD to do the restore.

My version information: Latest version of 2012 was installed about 3 weeks ago, and Windows 7 is 64 bit. (I cannot see my build number as I am unable to boot anymore.).

Here is what I think is happening.

Backup I am trying to recover completed with success. I also verified the backup and came out success. Somehow, in the backup, disk-size is wrong. It say 8,589,934,592 TB disk instead of 1TB disk that I have (I wish I had that disk, May be total of all storage in the world). Due to this issue, I first contacted Acronis - Chat support, and they asked me to use the CD based recovery. During the recovery selection, it show 8,589,934,592 TB under Free Space Before. (See attached). I don't know why this is this way (bug of ATIH?). During the time I took the backup, computer was working fine, and I was able to reboot etc without any issue. See my screen shot which I took from a camera. (Also note that I tried "change default" But it will not allow me to change Free Space Before value from  8,589,934,592 TB to 0.)

In summary, during the Backup process Acronis incorrectly recorded my disk size and now it cannot recover. (Too bad if ATIH cannot recover what I backed up)

Showing 8TB disk instead of 1TB disk I have

My recommendation would be to recheck with Live Chat. They will help on recovery issues and yours is a recovery issue.

I think this is a disk problem, it is not reporting the correct parameters so all other disk access is working off of incorrect parameters.

Have you tried running chkdsk /f on this drive?

To chkdsk I need a running computer. While it was working, computer did work fine. Even a chat-support logged into my computer and asked me to do a restore from my computer after getting remote access to my computer.

I have a empty partition where I am trying to restore. But As you can see in my screen - capture, look like backup time, it had stored some wrong disk parameters stored in my backup. Now the question is how to restore.

Hi Samy

I have experienced something similar, which you'll see in my recent thread -
32191: Cannot Restore XP System (C:) Drive from valid Backup - Says lack of Space.
This was posted on May 26th.

To satisfy your own curiosity, have you tried to Mount the backup file (for Drive C:); it should be a facility in the Full Acronis you can select on your Acronis Boot CD. When I ran a Mount, and then disk properties of the Mounted drive, I received a proper size of the backup file's data content. If the Mount works then it should give you some reassurance that the Backup data is there, in the file, ready for recovery.

Unless you are in urgent need to recover your system immediately, I would recommend that you skip the Chat Line and instead you initiate a formal Support request for "a Recovery" problem. (This is Free Support as mentioned by GroverH.) You will need to run some Diagnostic programs as listed at the end in my posting, which are available on the Acronis site. This will help the Support team to better diagnose - and solve, we hope - your problem. I have found, on previous support calls, that Chat Line involves a heck of a lot of waiting while the Support person gets up to speed on your problem, and/or seeks solutions from other team members while you hang unproductively on the line.

Cheers, Andrew.C

Samy,

You can boot your computer on the Windows installation DVD, choose repair the computer and launch a command prompt. Then you can run chkdsk /r on all the disks

Pat L,

Yes I can run a chkdsk, if there is a filesystem. Situation is that the filesystem partition is deleted by acronis during restore process and there is no filesystem anymore. That disk space is showing up as unused space. Only way to re-create the previous state is if I can restore my backup, which I am unable to do.

Hallo Samy Wee

-----------------------------
I would try to restore the 2012 image with a ATIH 2011 Boot CD.

I had with a ATIH 2010 PP Boot CD, a similar problem. I was able to select the partitions and click "Next" to restore (no change the wrong partition size). ATIH 2010 PP has restored (in my case) the partitions correctly. You can try it on your own risk.

I hope that the translation is useful.

Hallo Samy,

I suppose you have the same problem as I did and described in thread 31360 "ATIH 2012: System partition not recoverable".

But notice:
"The only way to get a running system back was do to a drive recovery with the boot medium! But this cleans the WHOLE disk! So I had to backup two more partitions with the boot medium. After the drive recovery I had my system back. Thereafter I had to restore the other two partions. After updating the system I did a fresh backup of the 3 partitions. And I got the SAME error when I started the recovery branch of ATIH2012 - again a defective backup of the system partition! There is NO difference between the Windows based oder Linux based backup! "

After getting the system back to work then do a chkdsk /r as recommended in item #7 of thread 31360 by Mark Wharton.

Then do a new backup of your partition and verify that the problem is solved by starting a restore until you see the screen showing the partition size.

For me the procedure worked.

Wolf

Wolf,

What you explained seems, to be similar, and would have used your method to recover. Thank you for the info. At this point I am backup and running using a older version of backup that I had, and I possibly given up on this corrupted backup.

Lets say I had an error on my disk, before I took the backup, but I was able to use my computer and reboot without a problem at that time. So I took a backup, and did a validation of the backup and came out success. So in theory I should be able to restore my partition to its original state. (Original State in this case may have had an error). If I take a successful backup and pass the validate test, then ATIH should guarantee recovery. In this case ATIH failed, and I am not happy about it. Backup software is something we have to trust, for stability and recover-ability, and should be rock solid.
