Please don't do that - messing with my keyboard layout?

Thread needs solution

Dear Acronis staff,

some time ago I upgraded to Acronis TrueImage Home 2012. I didn't have it installed as of yet, but I was certain I could use my recovery media for the newer version to restore older images ... or so I thought.

Well, it turned out to be a very distressing experience. I entered the password many times over, trying to figure out what could have possibly gone wrong. For some reason the mounting of the image would work on a running system with TrueImage installed, but not on the rescue media. I was staring at the screen in disbelief. Initially I even tried some other passwords that I had previously used for backup images. Nothing seemed to work.

The "EN" shown didn't provide much of a clue either here.

It took quite some time until I set out to type the password into the file name box when trying to browse to an image - or rather all the special characters used in the password. I'm sure you have heard how a good password is supposed to look.

Now, it turned out that for some reason the US English keyboard layout wasn't exactly US English anymore. It was suddenly UK English. After figuring out where to find the relevant characters I managed to enter the password and recover the image.

Please don't make this kind of decisions for your customers ever. Either provide a proper way to customize the CD accordingly or don't upgrade my perfectly workable "Acronis True Image Home 2011 Upgrade (English)" to "Acronis True Image Home 2012 Upgrade (United Kingdom)". That was a decision that your shop system clearly made for me. A decision that led to this very subtle issue - and it took me ages to figure out what's wrong. Of course it's impossible to contact the support (just as with a long standing Try&Decide bug that I contacted Acronis about in April 2008 and that isn't even fixed in the latest version I used on a live Windows - 2011; the ticket ID was #1393625 in case you still care, but your email address from back then is long since dead), because I'm not eligible for support.

I'd be much obliged if someone could rectify the issue in my account by reverting it back to the "(English)" (as in US English layout) version or, alternately, tell me how to customize the keyboard layout on the recovery media for the UK English version.

Thank you.

Side-note: the reason I chose this method of contacting someone, anyone at Acronis is because attempts at following up on the above ticket failed miserably and in the past Acronis already took another decision for me and downgraded my TrueImage edition, which used to be called "Workstation" to the "Home" edition some time ago. The downgrade is even retro-active it seems. I still have old installation and boot media that claim to be "TrueImage Workstation", but my account shows TrueImage since the first version that is registered there.

Update: hah, found the installer for the US English version. Going to try that and possibly report back once I'm done with that. Is there a way to set "English" as opposed to "United Kingdom" as default download language in the account? Thanks again.

... and despite the occasional frustration (such as now) I should add that I like TrueImage as a product, although I disagree with some of the "simplifications" that were made to the GUI over the years. I prefer full control.

Oliver,
Before changing anything,
Do take the time to do a current full backup of your system disk to include all partitions. This is safety insurance in case you want or need to return backup to where you were before making the changes. This backup can be done from within Windows or from the user created TI Rescue CD.
