Problems in dissimilar hardware recovery

Thread needs solution

Hello everyone,

This is my first time asking something online, so your consideration is much appreciated. We have computers that run Windows Embedded Standard with other proprietary software embedded into the system when the computer is provided. We take regular Acronis images to keep the data safe. However in case of a hardware disaster the new hardware will take a long time to be shipped inside the country so we are looking forward to be able to recover the image on any computer hardware to minimize the impact of a disaster. When i try to recover an image on another computer by booting with an Acronis True Image Home 2010 bootable and then select the universal restore option, but it ends with errors for "halmacpi.dll, ntkrnlpa.exe and processr.sys". It says that these files are required for installation of device.

It will be great help if someone could help me with instructions on how to get about this error and successfully recover the image on a dissimilar hardware.

The images are taken using either Acronis Backup and Recovery 2011 or Acronis True Image Home 2010.

thanks,
:)

Govind,

I am a bit out of my depth here, because of the version of Windows you are using, but it looks that ATI has trouble making the registry edits necessary because if cannot find the files. I am wondering if it would be possible to make a copy of these files in the same directory where you point ATI for the drivers.

Theoritically, ATI doesn't support that version of Windows, so it is possible that you have no solution with ATI anyway.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your reply. I have already tried coping the files in the drivers directory but it still gives me the same error. As for the version of windows, while startup it shows Windows XP and in the Computer properties it shows Windows Embedded Standard. I was told a dissimilar hardware recovery was done at some earlier stage and the system was recovered on a laptop for temp use, however i am not understanding where i am going wrong. I am trying to recover it on an HP workstation machine.

First, Windows Embedded is not supported. http://kb.acronis.com/content/8603 - i.e. correct functioning is not guaranteed. Apparently in your case CPU 'architecture' ( in terms of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283 ) of the new hardware differs from the old ( uniprocessor? ). On regular Windows XP you can find drivers for different HALs somewhere under c:\windows directory. On embedded - probably not, as it's really stripped down. Note that you need not only .dll files, but also corresponding .inf file(s) (is it hal.inf ? I don't know for sure. Never UR'ed something with HAL change).

dear all,

iwant to ask about the same issue,

can i use Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Universal Restore to recover acronis image to dissimilar hardware ???

ex: if i backup system files from DELL workstation OPTIPLEX 760, then recover the same image to DELL OPTIPLEX 780, does it work ???

really i am appreciate your help.

Yusuf,

It should work, yes. But you never know until you try it. Universal restore is a process that includes editing the registry files as they are being restored to update the drivers. That is not a simple process...

pat,

so, there are any trial version can i try with it ???

thanks pat, i am really appreciate your support

I am not sure there is a way to try the Universal Restore function per se without buying.
http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/download/backup-recovery/advanced-wor…

Also, I am not sure you can purchase the Add-on on top of the trial. You should confirm this with Acronis sales through Chat.

Thanks a lot guys, i appreciate everyone's help. looks like i will have to try some other program or find a different way out.... i will be trying VMware now and see if virsualization can help. Any suggestion for alternate methods are welcome. Thanks again.
