Question from Neophyte on Setting Up Backup

Thread needs solution

I am a neophyte in terms of personal computers so you may have to excuse me for asking the following question regarding how to set up a backup. Acronis support instructed me to use the following method to set up a backup: "1. Click on "Backup and recovery" tab, click on "Disk and partition backup". 2. Select the C: drive in source and external hard drive in destination filed. 3. Click on "Incremental" next to "Backup scheme". Select "Differential" 4. Select "Create a full version after every 5 differential version". 5. Select "Delete version chain older than 7 days", click Ok. So that a full backup will be created after every 5 differential backups. Any backup older than 7 days will be deleted automatically."

Is this the most efficient way to create a backup?

Thank you.

Not enough info about your system disk to provide a good response.
Which version of Windows?

Item 2 of the instructions is questionable and may or may not be adequate--depending upon how your disk is configured. If your Windows OS is either Windows 7 or 8, then his instructions are inadequate and should be changed to "select disk mode" rather than selecting C only. A "disk mode image" backup instead of C ony would provide you with the backup content needed to replace your hard drive should you have a disk failure or virus infection.

\Would you consider posting a screen capture of your Windows Disk Management graphical view. This capture will show hour your system disk is configured. The instruction to backup only C could be very incomplete (which is why I am asking for a screen capture to see your system disk) unless you have other more comprehensive backups.

The suggestion to "delete versions older than 7 days" has been reported to have issues as this involves consolidsation after backup #6 (full + 5 dif) becomes older than 7 days.

Here is a comparable differential backup based on "store X number of recent version chains" which does not involve consolidation but will perform automatic deletion of the oldest backus when the trigger keep value (chain=6 files [ full plus 5 dif] ) multiplied by X (how many chains to keep) reaches your specified number. This particulr example would begin automatic deletion after the 13th backup (3rd full) is completed. Once the automatic deletion kicks in, then as each new chain (6 files) is completed, the oldest chain will be deleted.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme. 2 Diff, Keep 2 chains. The 2-2 is user choice.
