recover to earlier state

Thread needs solution

Just bought a new computer and have tried to take snapshot partition backups at each stage of personalisation and software installation.

If I recover a much earlier partition, do I have to format the partition to make sure later "mistakes" are not left sitting on it?

And an unrelated question which intrigues me: - Why would anyone exclude system and hidden files ? Surely the idea of a simple foolproof mirror backup is to recreate it without any hassle?

Thanks for any help

Richard

When you restore a partition or disk image, it is restored to exactly the state as of when the backup image was created.
e.g. You make a disk backup image on Tuesday. You make various changes to the disk on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday you restore Tuesday's disk image. The disk is now exactly as it was on Tuesday, as though Wednesday and Thursday's changes never happened.

Re. exclusions, it's normal to exclude large unnecessary files such as Hibernation and Paging. You normally would not want to exclude working system files, such as files that Windows requires.

Thanks Tuttle

Just what I hoped. And I didn't think about the page file.
