Recover my files from a Incremental Backup - REALLY weird Filenames

Thread needs solution

Hi, my hard drive died and I tried to recover all my files using TI 2012 Home on another hard drive. I always use Incremental backup and I setup True Image to do the backup automatically every day. At the moment of recovering my files I had 62 .tib files. So, I choose to recover the complete backup who correspond to my D: Drive who contains all my media/photos and important documents. It's works...ok... but TI 2012 adds weird characters to all of the filenames when recovering the files from my backup to my new hard drive.

I specify that I use the option: Recover and At the same location (since my old hard drive was letter D: and my new is also D: ).

Here's a exemple of my, very annoying, problem:

Greetings,
I'll be honest. I think you are very lucky that you have access to this data in the first place. When renamed, will those ringtones import correctly into iTunes and play?

Those skewed file names are usually indicative of metadata corruption. Given the number of .tib files you have I would not attempt to repair. Its time to start over. You are putting your backed up data at considerable risk using a back up scheme that incorporates such a large number of incrementals between fulls. Please consider this. If just one of the incrementals in the chain is bad, all subsequent back ups cannot be used and are lost. In this case, a differential back up scheme would be better, or I would recommend maintaining several chains with a lesser number of incremental snapshots between fulls. The choice is yours of course. Quotas or retention rules can be used to manage disk space. If you have more questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi, thanks for the reply and sorry for my english (lol). I used the Acronis Rescue Disk using the same backup and everything works like a charm... really weird problem... doesn't work with the software in WIndows but working with the rescue disk with the exact same .tib files...

All disk or partition restores should be performed from the bootable Rescue Media. It's safest.

Greetings Martin, MVP Tuttle,

Your english is fine sir. Your post and descriptions were quite clear :)

For our information, can you please tell us if the boot CD you used was the same build as your installed version? Meaning, has your product been upgraded so the build used for the original back up is different that the build used during restore? This could change if the product was updated, or if you downloaded a newer .iso image from your user account.

We do recommend using recovery media for these operations, and as I mentioned before, you might want to consider a smaller number of incrementals between fulls.
