Recovering files to a new computer

Thread needs solution

I am sure this has been covered but I did not find it.

My question is:

I currently make full backups to an external drive using Acronis TI 2010 build 7046 on my Win XP system.

At some point in the future if my XP computer dies I will buy a new computer with a different version of windows. I would like to be able to restore data files from my Acronis external hard disk backup. But my Acronis app will be gone.

How do I recover the files on my new computer? In fact how do I recover my Acronis license since my old Acronis application has hit the bit bucket?

Jeffrey,

In reverse order! :)

Your serial numbers are always available in your Acronis account so long as you registered them there in the first place. I also suggest having a text file in which a copy is kept on your backup drive. You can download all your serial numbers as a text file when you log into your account.

You will also be able to download your copy of TIH as well. Your question suggests you haven't made an Acronis recovery CD, this you ought to do. This will contain a Linux environment and a copy of TIH which will allow you to restore your image. You need to make this CD and test it to make sure it can see all your hardware. I would also recommend downlaoding the SAFE environment which is under the Plugins tab. Downlaod, install and then make the recovery CD. The SAFE option uses BIOS calls rather than Linux drivers which if you have a problem accessing your hardware in the Linux environment might do the trick.

There is no problem importing data files (apart possibly from Outlook), however, you won't be able to import the vast majority of applications as they require registry entries that won't exist in your new OS.

There are some ways around this, though not 100% guaranteed successful.

Data files such as documents etc, no problem.
