Recovery CD does not boot, hangs
I'm using True Image 10 Home (german) Build 4942 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500 (built in 2009). When booting using the recovery CD media, the computer hangs when the regular option is selected. True Image "Safe Mode" works, but recovery is not possible because drivers for USB or network drives.
I was trying to replace the built-in HDD with a new one, which is also a test for TI 10 because that situation is identical to a full HDD disaster recovery scenario.
Booting from the recovery CD in Safe Mode works and the True Image program window appears correctly. Unfortunately, Safe Mode supports only local HDDs without any USB or network drivers, leaving notebook users (no second internal HDD slot available) no option to recover any backups from.
Steps leading to the error:
- OEM drive was Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB HDD SATA
- Replacement Drive is OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD SATA2
- CD is recognized as boot media
- BIOS boots from CD (t=0)
- True Image boot-up options are displayed (t+5 seconds)
- Boot-up Splash screen is displayed while the CD is being read from. (t+10s)
- Splash screen disappears, leaving a blank screen while the CD drive spins down (t+20-30s)
- When normal mode was selected: blank screen stays on indefinitely, hangs
- When Safe Mode was selected: True Image GUI window appears after 2-3 seconds, looks normal, but no external drives or network options are available
Solutions tried with no effect:
- booting from the original retail box CD media
- booting from a newly created recovery CD media after updating to Build 4942
- setting BIOS from AHCI to compatibility mode and back
- disabling and enabling BIOS legacy port support (COM, LPT), USB support
- starting from AC power, battery power and with or without a docking station
- disconnecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard, external USB HDD)
- disabling all wireless options in BIOS and by physical on/off switch
Configuration hints:
- OCZ Vertex SSD was tested for controller or read errors with BIOS HDD test option and in external USB enclosure on a different machine. The OCZ Vertex is working flawlessly, but not partitioned, not formatted.
- Notebook work flawlessly in Windows Vista, boots A-OK when OEM HDD is re-inserted
- Backup *.tib-files would be available on a network attached storage share as well as a regular USB HDD
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Hi,
I have a similar problem with TrueImage Home 2009.
Booting with the image I created from within the application (build 9769) is not supporting keyboard or mouse...
In the initial screen, where either the "full" or the "safe" version can be selected, the mouse still works - but as soon as the full version shows the main GUI, mouse and keyboard are not working anymore.
"Safe" boot works - but I need the network support.
Thanks, best Regards, Jens

I have a very similar situation with Home 2009. It boots fine from my Lenovo SL400 but I try it in a desktop with networked drives I need to access and get the same results described here. The CD boot to splash screen, select full version and the CD powers down and screen remains blank with blinking cursor. Tried installing the program and it installs fine, created a Bootable Recovery disk with same results.

I have the same hardware and problem as Eric, the original poster.
I use Acronis True Image 10 Home build # 4942 on a Lenovo ThinkPad T500 running Windows XP SP3. I've used the program successfully for some years.
My ThinkPad recently failed after a BIOS update, taking 20 minutes to boot. It was fixed under warranty by Lenovo but when I now try to restore from an image on a USB external hard disk the process fails. It gets to the point where I'm asked to click on 'Reboot' then the screen goes blank and stays that way; I've let it go for up to 23 minutes but no result, just the blank screen.
I loaded BIOS defaults but that did not help.
I got Acronis to validate the image archive and it's OK.
I tried another image archive with the same result
I uninstalled, cleaned the Registry, then reinstalled TI but that made no difference.
I then tried booting from 2 different Acronis rescue CD's, both of which I've used successfully in the past. The Acronis main screen came up and I selected full version but then the screen returned to a blank screen.
I next tried the "quiet acpi=off noapic" input after F11 at the Acronis screen. This enabled Acronis to load and I was able to go through the steps until I had to choose a target partition for the restore.
The normal C: drive on my computer was not shown in the list, only the external drive (that contains the image) and it was now labeled C: in the Acronis window.
I can go no further. I've attached an Acronis Report Utility report.txt for your use (sysinfo.nfo was too big @ 7MB).
Please Help!
Yours sincerely,
David McMurray

On that desktop computer, are you trying to boot the Recovery CD from a SATA CDROM drive? If so, do you have an IDE CDROM drive which you can slap into the desktop computer and then see if you can fully launch ATI with the Recovery CD in the IDE CDROM drive? Just a thought since I can boot the Recovery CD just fine if I put it in my computer's IDE CDROM, but can't if I put it in my computer's SATA CDROM.

After changing the BIOS SATA setting from 'ACHI' to 'Compatibility' and rebooting I still couldn't restore the Acronis image from Windows; after clicking the 'Reboot' button I again got a blank screen and no disk activity on either the internal or USB external disks.
I was at least able to restore from the Acronis Boot Disk. I used the F11 - "quiet acpi=off noapic" option.
This is in progress now and will be done in 5 hours -Windows is much faster than this.
What do I need to do so I can restore an image from Windows please?

I honestly don't know exactly why you can't restore from within Windows.

Lenovo does something different with the MBR and TI cannot properly restore the MBR.

John:
Lenovo's MBR occupies 4 sectors. I'm not sure why you're having trouble restoring it. If you restore "Track 0 and MBR" with TI it will restore the first 63 sectors on the disk. That should do the job.
What specifically happened when you tried to restore?

I first created a full backup image.
I then removed my boot drive
I then installed a fresh drive (this is now the only drive in my W700, I can install two drives)
I booted using the TI 2010 recovery CD I had created earlier on this system
I found the backup image (it is on an drive connected to the eSATA port in my dock, the SATA connection runs MUCH faster than the USB connection)
I selected to restore the partition and the MBR
TI reported that it completed the operation
I then removed the CD, powered off and attempted to boot from the recovered drive. The MBR cannot be found.
BTW this seems to be a common problem on the Lenovo/IBM thinkpads, I've seen similar post in the Acronis forums and when I search the web I find lots of other similar post. One of the post I found at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=211428 seems to have a solution. I've not had time to try this but plan to do so as soon as I learn the details. This is getting into areas where I read something and have no idea what I just read.
In the post I mentioned above the poster stated the following:
Once burned to CD, boot to CD which will ask you to load it on the hard drive.
Once finished copying to HD, you'll pop out the CD and reboot on which it will boot into BootIt.
Choose the Work with Partitions option.
Then there is a View MBR button.
Once in the MBR I had three selections listed;
IEM_PRELOAD-0 (which was set as Active)
MBR Entry 1
Bootit EMBFM
All I did was set the second option (MBR Entry 1) to Active.
After that it would boot fine.

On the surface your restore procedure looks correct. Having the target disk installed internally is the best method to use with the Lenovo laptops since they use nonstandard disk geometry. But let's look beneath the surface:
1. I'm not aware of any of the standard error messages that say "MBR cannot be found". Please describe what happened. Did the machine attempt to boot? Did it just display a blinking cursor? Did you get an error message, and if so, what did it say?
2. Did you restore all of the partitions on the disk including the Recovery Partition?
3. Before restoring did you go into the Lenovo BIOS and set the Predesktop Area to "disabled" so that the recovery partition was visible and writable?

I have an IBM G40 2384 EHU Thinkpad and purchased the Acronis True Image 2010 to make an image copy of the internal 40GBT drive . The image backup seems to work ok but the key issue is that I cannot make a bootable CD using your "Create Usable Rescue Media" utility!! Every time i put a writeable CD in the internal drive I get an " Invalid Media" error ?? The internal CD is a Teak DW-224E and I have no problens copying files to the CD.
Is there a fix for this issue ?

Robert:
Instead of creating a CD directly, try saving the rescue media as an ISO image file. Then use your favorite image burning software to create a bootable CD from the ISO image.

How can I get a hold of the special ISO build? I'm having the same problem.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires

Darren,
If you have registered your Acronis copy, you can download the latest ISO from your Acronis account.
If this ISO doesn't work:
- if you have the Plus Pak, you should try with the WinPE build; it has better chances of working.
- if you don't have the Plus Pak, you can contact Acronis support. They might be able to create a build for your drivers.

If you are having trouble getting a TI to create a bootable CD, you might also try this
1. Use a CD-R disc
2. Insert the CD into the tray but do not close the tray. Allow the program to close when needed.
3. Intitate the create CD instructions.
Also, you have the options as in post #16 offered by Mark.
If you need more help in creating the iso CD as suggested by Pat, check my signture index below. Item #2-G.

This is for Migrate Easy, not TI. Creating the CD-R is not the problem, the issue is that I receive a black screen after selecting "Full version" from the Acronis Loader screen.
