Recovery fails

Thread needs solution

Installing an antivirus brought down my new Windows 10 install, and after several attempts at repairing it, I turned to my Acronis backup. Had to download the latest version of the bootable CD to get it to see my USB drive. I have about 8 or 9 backups, with 2 full and the rest differential. There's another issue here because I had set it to backup hourly and keep backups until my disk got full, but it reverted to doing only a differential backup (with no auto cleanup set, but apparently it was only keeping 7 versions). Got it to change enough to do a full backup before I installed Windows 10, but it's also been a week and it has not backed up anything since upgrading to Windows 10! But first I need to fix the recovery. I tried restoring the latest version, the full backup, and it says recovery fails. Tried recovering an older differential backup with validation turned on, it still says "Recovery failed." Doesn't say anything about the validation, just the recovery. Trying to restore the entire partition here. Looks like it wiped my old C partition in the process, so my Acronis backups is now the only way I can get my system back! I set it to try restoring another older backup before I left the house this morning, we'll see if that does anything. In the meantime, anyone have any thoughts?

John-Mark,

Assuming you have access to another computer, Acronis have a 30 day trial version of ATI 2016.  You could download that, use it to created a new rescue media DVD and use that DVD to perform the recovery.  Also, did you note when the error message occurred?  Was it shortly after the restore started, or did the restore run for an extended time, say 30 to 45 minutes, and then crash?

I can boot this computer into Mac OS X, which is how I created a new bootable CD. Would using the 2016 version make a difference? I could also try installing the version of Acronis I have on my Windows To Go USB drive and restoring from there with the program if you think it might be the CD. The error message occurred after it ran for an hour or more. Still happening on the latest version I tried. Had to use my computer this morning so I should note that the restore process does leave the old C drive partition blank (or at least changed). Acronis shows it as "unallocated," and it no longer shows up when booted to Mac OS X. So it's doing something during that time.

John-Mark,

Dual boot Mac systems are a mystery to me.  So, my recommendations are really "best guesses".

My personal experience is that the ATI 2014 recovery media works best when dealing with a potentially corrupt backup file.  I have had it succeed when the ATI 2016 Linux failed and the ATI 2016 WinPe (Build 6027) failed.  So, you should contact Acronis and see if they will let you download the ATI 2014 recovery media.

It's not a Mac per se, it's a Dell. I have a request in with Acronis, but it said something about support expiration. I guess I have to pay to get a response from them? Kinda ridiculous as I just bought Acronis in January. I really wanted a backup that would work as well as Time Machine on the Mac but I guess Acronis isn't it. I'm thinking about just formatting the drive and doing a clean install of Windows 10, though it will be annoying to reinstall all my programs.

I'm trying recovery from my Windows To Go disk now. I notice that it only allows selection of the entire disk (including EFI parition), while in the Acronis CD I was selecting just the C partition. Does this make a difference?

I too have no experience with this type of dual-boot system scenario, only with dual-boot Windows.

Does your C: partition also include the Windows BCD store (Boot Configuration Data) and is the EFI partition untouched in the sense that restoring it would just put back what is already there?

Also what type of backup do you have that you are trying to restore from here?  Is it a full disk backup that includes all partitions on the drive, or is it a selective backup of particular partitions only?

Recovery from the Windows to go drive failed, but with no error messages. It looked like it restored the entire drive, but only the recovery partition shows up in Explorer. The EFI partition was there, hidden away of course. What should be the C drive shows up as unallocated space. Not sure why, but for some reason I got an extra 2.3 GB of unallocated space at the beginning of the drive, too.

I don't recall what I set Acronis to backup, but I think it was the whole drive. The dual boot shouldn't make a difference, the Mac OS X drive is completely separate with it's bootloader on it's own EFI partition. I could pull it from the system and the system should be indistinguishable from a single boot system. This should be a full disk backup. The only partitions are the C partition, EFI, recovery, the standard Windows ones.

Since this failed and I had trouble immediately after installing Windows 10 last time, I went ahead and did a clean install of Windows 10. I might still want to restore particular files, can this be done?

    John-Mark,

If you now have a working Windows 10 system and have installed ATIH 2015 on this, then you should be able to use Explorer to view the contents of your backup image .TIB file and from there, you can copy & paste files as you would from any other disk drive or source.  Alternative, you can Mount the backup image as a drive letter and do the same from that virtual drive.
