Recovery run through didn't go as expected

Thread needs solution

I had every intention of using Acronis. I was going to do a run through a couple of times to make sure I had the right things selected and then I was going ahead with the recovery. I was on the phone for 2 hours with a Microsoft tech and it was worse when he got done than it was before. He's supposed to call me back tomorrow but I decided to just go ahead with Acronis.

Apparently nothing is going to go right for me. I set my boot sequence to boot first from CD.

I put my Acronis boot disk in and restarted. It said Acronis was loading and anyway the program opened, but I couldn't control my mouse. I could not select "Recovery." I could only move the mouse in a straight up and down pattern, no deviation to the right or left, it was real jerky and as I'd go over things it would select everything. For instance, Backup was first on the list at the right, and then Recovery. But when as I moved down both were selected and I tried to click when I got on Recovery but nothing happened.

Try using the usbmouse=off Linux parameter. This can be added when you create the CD. You can also enter it by pressing F11 at the Acronis Menu (type it in after "quiet ").

I'm not real sure I understand what you said above. I'm a dummy so could you be just a litter more detailed?

I'm just in the process of doing a Dell Factory Image reinstall. Since I did my backups to an Iomega external hard drive, is there any reason why I could not still use my backup to recover my system as it was? I have the Dell reinstall done and am in the process of downloading some programs right now, but it would sure be easier if I could use thie full backup I made with Acronis. Please advise as soon as possible so I can get on with things. I'm thinking if I work on it every day I might have everything done in two weeks!

Thanks much

Nikilet,

When you boot from the Acronis rescue CD you will see on the top left of your screen the words Acronis Loading.......... . When you see this, press the F11 key and you should then see word quiet......[ ] appear. In the box or just after the .... type in the usbmouse=off follow the instructions on the screen, you will eventually get to the TI menu - now see if your mouse works correctly.

If it does, then once you've checked that TI on the CD can see all your drives and you have restored your image, you can then enter that parameter into the box about Linux parameters when making the rescue CD. I think from memory it is the third page on the media builder wizard.

Check out pages 155 and 156 in the User Guide.

I'm sure I did something wrong, but it didn't work.

When the word quiet showed up there were no dots after it, and I had to type usbmouse=off in front of it. I didn't do a space after that. Should I?

Then a whole bunch of script ran on this black page with Acronis up in the left corner. When done there was somethng and then the # sign and it was waiting for me to type something but I didn' now what to put.

Part of the reason there's confusion over this is because Acronis has released several different versions and the method of entering the Linux parameters are different for each one.

When you log into your Acronis account and look at TI 10, there should be a Bootable Media tab. You can download the ISO from there and then use an ISO capable burning program to create the TI CD. This version usually has more updated drivers than the one you can create directly from TI using Media Builder.

Newer versions of TI support adding Linux parameters when you create the CD. This option is not available with TI 10. All parameters must be entered when you boot the TI CD.

When booting to the TI CD created with Media Builder (this is the version TI creates), you press F11 after you boot the CD and when you're on the Acronis menu (the menu where you select to start TI). The box that is displayed will show the word quiet. Leave quiet and add the new parameter(s) after it, separating them with a space. For example: quiet usbmouse=off

When booting to the TI CD created from the downloaded ISO, it should be like Colin said. Press F11 when Starting Acronis Loader... appears on the screen. Then enter the parameter(s) in the box.

The reason you got a bunch of text and then got dropped to the # prompt was because you didn't put the space between quiet and usbmouse=off. This means that neither option was applied.

Fixing mouse and keyboard problems can be difficult. There are some that just don't like Linux. These include quite a few wireless ones. Several Linux parameters can be tried, but if they don't work, you would need to use a newer version of TI or try a different mouse or keyboard (possibly wired USB or PS2).

I'm done fooling with the pictures. Nothing has worked. Now I want to know if there's any sense in even using this Acronis, so I need to know if I'm going to be able to access the Recovery option if I need it again. I downloaded this ISO thing you talk about above and have absolutely no idea what to do with it from there. You might as well be talking Greek to me.

Read items 2-G inside my signature index. There is also other information there as well in 2-E.

No one can offer you any guarantees. The program works for most of those who are willing to practice with it and become familiar with its features and requirements--way before any crisis arises. When a crisis arises, you already need to know how to make your recovery because you have practiced it before.

Regarding your pictures. If TrueImage vaidated your backup and the pictures ended up not being usable, there is a good chance that the problem occurred when downloading from camera to computer.

I don't know your procedure but it is wise to use a Card Reader for the download between computer and reader so the camera is not involved in the connection. Also, it is also wise to burn your pictures to DVD as addtiional insurance against their loss. you should not use your computer as the sole storage source for your important pictures.

Good luck with your practice. My signature index below also has many good items which can help you to understand how to use TrueImage Home.

Additionally, this link below can be of considerable help.

I'm sure I read in one of your posts that you now have Windows up and running again, but only some of the picture folders are accessible.

1. If Windows is working, then as far as the pictures are concerned, we, you, ought to be able to work entirely from within Windows.

2. I recall that you are using Vista, if you are, please post snip shots of what you are seeing from within the Windows version of TI.

Short of remotely accessing your system to see exactly what is occuring it is difficult to sort out where you are at and what actions you are taking to get to where things aren't working as it seems they should. Snip shots of whether you are mounting your tib image or if you are exploring it ect would be most useful.

Could you also perhaps just use one thread if your Windows system is now running, as certainly for me it is getting difficult to thread the different threads together.

PS, why this post has appeared in italics is anyones guess!

Colin,

I think in Post #3 (your post), the end tag is messed up for the "usbmouse=off" text. Everything is italics after that.

Colin: For quite some time now I have just been replying back to those who have been writing me with various fixes, none of which have worked. I appreciate your attention but I am about ready to have a nervous breakdown over all this stuff and I've decided to let it go. I think now, since going into my backup and trying to open pictures, etc., I have corrupted some files. I'm done with pictures.

Scott Hieber gave me some directions for using the F11 key that were a little more clear and sometime I am going to try the F11 fix again for running the Acronis boot CD and see if I can make that work. I downloaded that ISO file from my account and then read Grover's directions but either it's just too deep for me or I'm so sick of all the problems I've had with everything that if it isn't something simple I don't want to tackle it. If I can't get the F11 thing to work I think I'm just going to forget about Acronis. To be honest, I think it's too complicated for the average home user to figure out without some real one-on-one lessons.

So thank you and best wishes.

Well, I'll go to the foot of my stairs! All sorted now thanks.
