Replace windows home server 2011 with acronis and a linux server?
Hello,
I'm currently running a windows home server 2011 (WHS) with 4 TB on a RocketRaid controller. The windows home server hangs at least once a week and I'd like to replace it with a linux server. I used WHS because at the time, Acronis didn't support a compressed backup of a bitlockered windows 7 computer.
My questions are:
1. Can I used a linux server to store my backups and do a bare-metal restore of the computers on my (wireless) home network using the backup on the linux server?
2. Not critical, but can I do this if the backed up computer is bitlockered windows 7?
Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,
I'm running OpenFiler, which is a Linux based NAS distro. It works great, very reliable, and free. I created an smb/cifs volume, and use that as a backup target for ATIH. It was a little tricky to get OpenFiler set up, but I think it was worth the effort. I also created a webdav volume that I use to share my Outlook calendar.
In my case, OpenFiler is running as a guest under VMware ESXi 5. If you do that, you can use your server for other things too. I used physical drive mappings so that OpenFiler could manage the disk array.
