Thread needs solution

Windows XP
500 GB hard drive with 83 GB used
task set to validate backup
I'm getting this error. I've deleted all the archives so the incremental will make a complete and start over and this still happens. I formatted my external hard drive and tried it again and I still get this message. Help me please or tell me what more information is needed. Thank you.

The error message indicates you may have a problem with your hard drive. I'd run Chkdsk X: /f /r where X is the drive to be checked, or use the manufacturers utility to test the disk. Are drive C: and J: all on the same disk?

No my J drive is an external My Book hard drive. Last weekend I formatted the J drive and my backups worked for a couple time earlier this week. Now I'm getting the same error on a different task:

I think my external hard drive is going bad.

Run CHKDSK J: /r/f to see what is reported. You may need to go to the manufacturer's website and download the diagnostics for your particular model.
