Restauring W7 with dual boot

Thread needs solution

Hello,

My configuration, 2 hard disks, dual boot XP/W7:

Master disk with 3 partitions
C: Windows XP SP3
D: Applications Windows XP
E: Work

Salve disk With 5 partitions
F: Windows Seven RC 7100
G: Applications Windows 7
H: I: J: Work

Working with TI 2009 (V12)
Save C & D on both XP and W7.

Tried to restore C & D for W7 disks and got a black screen with the following message at W7 loading time:
================
windows failed to start...........
.........
insert windows installation disc.........
status: 0xc000000f
Info: the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
=============

Downloaded TI-2010 demo, and got the same message after restore C: & D: for W7.
Xp SP3 on the first drive is still working....
Any idea ?? Is it a dual boot problem ??
Thanks for any answer.

Is the XP drive the booting drive in the BIOS?

Are you using the Windows 7 boot manager or a third-party boot manager?

Does booting from the Windows 7 DVD and doing a boot repair fix the problem?

Many thanks for your answer MudCrab,

XP drive is booting drive in the bios
Using W7 boot manager and EasyBcd to customize (under W7)
Booting from W7 DVD i cannot get a "repair" option.
Only got (advanced options) Safe mode, Safe ..., Last know config, Debug mode, Normal Mode...
trying theses modes link to:
Missing file \windows\system32\drivers\Megasr.sys   OR  Ql40xx.sys

Thanks for your help

Those don't sound like normal Windows 7 DVD options. They sound like the standard "Safe Mode" menu for Windows.

When you're booting the Windows 7 DVD are you pressing a key when prompted so it doesn't skip it and boot the drive instead?

Hello MudCrab,

I found the problem .... in fact 2 problems:

Here after is the chronology of the events:

1 - Installed TI-2010 demo on W7
2 - Tried scheduled task to save C: & D: from W7   OK
3 - Tried One click save  OK (saved C: from XP and W7)
4 - Started "Try & decide"
5 - Installed a small application
6 - Stopped "Try & Decide" with "do not apply changes"
7 - At Windows restart time, a transient "Acronis loader started..." then Windows Boot option for XP or W7 comes up...
8 - W7 selected starts but the installed program (step 5) remains installed... this means that the step 6 is not working and "Try & decide" at least in my dual boot environment does not work properly.
9 - To go back to the original W7 (the one before "Try & decide"), i started from within W7 a restore for C: (from image saved in step 3)
10- Restore started with a re-boot with Acronis loader.... the "shut down after restore" has been checked.
11- Restore seems to work properly, and at shut down time, a small windows, "Waiting for the system to stop 1 second..." stays on for long time (at least 1/2 hour)
12- Reset the computer, tried to load W7 gives me the stop 0xc000000f message
13- This means that the restore from within W7 does not work for my dual boot environment and leaves some garbage in the XP partition (see step 14).
14- To go back to a working W7 / XP dual boot environment i restored C: for both W7 and XP (thanks to step 3 "One click saving")

I tried two times the steps 4 to 14 with exactly the same results...

I will avoid to use the "Try & decide" and the "restore from W7 dual boot".....

Hope this description will help.....
Regards
Jean

When you used T&D, did you make sure that both the Windows 7 partition and the Windows 7 "applications" partition were being protected? Since you're not keeping everything in one partition, it would be best to keep them synchronized.

Personally, I think T&D is an accident waiting to happen.

When you did the restore in Step 9, if you did it from the TI CD instead of from Windows 7, does it still cause the error?

HELLO Mudcrab,

Thanks again for your answer.

I did the try & decide protecting C: for XP and W7 and it is the same problem.

Tried restore (step 9) from TI CD.... same problem the "waiting system to stop for 1 sec" window stays for ever, and a W7 boot gives the 0xc... error.

From a clean situation (after step 14) tried only a restore of the W7 partition with the TI CD... same problem, reboot gives the 0xc... error. (with and without Shut down PC after resore). This means that T&D is not involved in this error.

From this error  (0xc0... loading W7) tried to restore only MBR 1st disk (XP) and a W7 boot gives the 0xc... error.

Another try from this error  (0xc0... loading W7) to restore XP disk and MBR (1st disk XP) and the W7 boot is OK !!!.

This means that there is 3 problems at least in my dual boot environment:

1- Try and decide is not working to restore the initial situation

2- The "shut down after restore" hang for ever from TI CD or W7 environment

3- Restoring only one (W7) system partition destroy something in the first (XP) system partition and destroy the W7 boot.

I will not buy the 2010 Version, and will uninstall it ......

Many thanks for your help

P.S. Nobody from Acronis aware of these problems ?????

Jean

Jean, It may work better if both XP and Windows 7 were on the booting drive instead of two separate drives. I'm not suggesting you change your setup, I'm just saying that Windows (in general) seems to work better that way.

I suspect that the same problem that's not letting T&D work is what's causing the booting problems. TI is making changes to the booting drive and then getting confused. In my opinion, Acronis as not been super-strong in the multi-boot setup restoration area. The program tries to "fix" things and sometimes ends up making it worse. It would be nice to have the option to turn off all "fixing" and have it just restore the partition(s) (nothing else gets modified).
