Restore Backup to C Drive on new disk
I cloned my HD as an emergency replacement sometime ago and it works fine as a reserve.
I also kept an current image backup of my current HDD.
When my HD failed i restored from the backup to a new HD and everything seemed fine until a month or so later i noticed that i can no longer install Windows 7 updates.
I tried all of the Microsoft and other suggestions to fix the problem but no luck. I also started getting a message that Windows wasnt genuine!
I desperation i checked the reserve cloned disk and it was fine and would install updates so i installed every updated available for Windows, backed it up to an image and then restored it to my main HD.
Once again the Windows Updates dont work! I repeated the procedure several times but once it was restored no updates are allowed.
Is this problem caused by the backup / restore process? Is there a solution?
Thanks

Philip,
Your problems are probably the result of moving from a standard (older) 512 byte/sector drive to a newer 4K byte/sector drive (Advanced Format also known as AF drive). There is a fix for Windows 7 that should be applied to your older source drive before the backup or clone. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018.
Also if you have any Intel Storage Technology (RST) or Matrix Storage Technology driver/software installed, they also should be updated to the latest versions on the older source before the backup and restore or clone to the new drive. The older Intel Matrix Storage Technology driver/software does not seem to support AF drives.
If you wish, you can try and fix the issues on the existing newly cloned (or restored) drive by removing any Intel Matrix Storage Technology or Rapid Storage Technology (RST) software using Windows Control Panel / Remove a Program feature. Be sure that you also install the fix for Windows 7 mentioned above it is not already installed. Reboot, and check to see if Windows Update starts working again, if so, download and install the latest Intel RST driver/software (version 11.7.0.1013) http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-031502.htm for your system (if necessary) and test again.
If these steps are successful, you may also want to rebuild your search index to create a new index database to improve your search results performance. http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/rebuild-the-search-index/

James,
Thanks for your answer, I have never seen the option to restore the Disk Signature, where do i find it?
In answer to the second post i cant find either of these programs in the Control Panel / remove program section.
I will try installing the Windows 7 fix on the new disk and see how that goes first, then if it doesn't i will install it on the cloned drive and start again.
Thanks for your help, i will post the results.
