Restore disk image on a different operating system

Thread needs solution

Hi all. I made a disk image of my c: and d: drive with Windows Vista as my OS. Can I restore those images if I upgrade the OS to Windows 7?

Yes, assuming the TI rescue CD works on your hardware - you have tested it haven't you?

The rescue CD is Linux and it boots up with its own environment so it really doesn't care much about what is on the disk since one of its first operations is to delete the partition that is going to be restored.

I assume you realize that when you restore the images your Windows 7 will be gone and you will be back to Vista. If your D drive is just data it wouldn't need restoring to get back to Vista unless there was now unwanted junk on it.

Hello Marc and Seekforever,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Yes, it's possible to restore these images in such situation, but please note the following things:

-Current version of Acronis True Image Home 2009 does not officially support Windows 7

-Our program will ask you to select drive\partition to recover your image, and if you select used drive, program will rewrite it with data from image.

Thank you.

IF you have a disk image of say your XP or Vista system drive and your restore to some other drive, whether that other drive has W7 on it or not, the restored drive will be XP (or Vista), whatever was in the image that your restored.
