Restore & duplicate files

A Restore produced duplicate files which typically have the original file name followed by a ~ and then 8 random letters.
The Knowledge Base comments seem to be limited to Acronis 10 for this problem but this happened with Acronis 11, so the problem obviously has not been solved or I am making the same mistake as others previously.
Relevant info; Windows XP (fully updated), Acronis 11 Home, Thunderbird lost emails from a folder (which appears to be an unsolved problem with Thunderbird from the online comments), tried to restore to prior to the email disappearance, tried to restore a single file but obviously did something wrong and a full restore occurred, ended up with 45K+ duplicate files.
Now slooowly deleting duplicate files folder by folder.
I will have to be desperate to do a restore again or maybe I will switch sides and go Mac.
