Restoring selected files to a new PC

Thread needs solution

I've been an Acronis user for many years... but, thankfully, I've never had to restore any files... until now. My main laptop will only boot in safe mode... so it's time to move on to this newer PC. I need to get some of my old files (Word, Windows Mail messages etc) onto this new PC... and luckily I have a fairly recent total system backup of my old system on an external disc (via USB).

My question is pretty basic... but I've not been able to find the answer. How do I select files from the total system state backup that I made? I don't want to download a total image of my old PC (in case the problems that it has are introduced to my new PC).

My total backup was made using an old version of Acronis (It says Acronis True Image Home Version 11.0 when I look at my old PC in safe mode. However, I think this was an upgrade that I downloaded from the Acronis site for my original Acronis True Image product).

Do I need to download a new version of Acronis for my new PC... or can I access Acronis application on my backup disc? If I have to download a new version, will the new version work with the old backup that I have on my external disc (ie will it allow me to restore some of the files from the old backup on the external disc?).

The backup is a series of .tib files. Can I open these to see which documents etc that I want to restore?

Many thanks for your help.

You should have your Acronis recovery CD. Boot your new computer on it, while the backup USB disk is plugged in. You should be able to mount the TIB file, or simply restore selected files and folders, while the computer is running from that CD. I am not sure that the restore only certain files and folders feature is there on older versions...

If you cannot do that, you still have the option of installing the latest version of ATI on your new computer. If you can, use your older ACronis recovery CD to backup the entire system disk of the new computer before installing 2012. THis way, you will be able to restore if you have any serious installation issues.

Once you access the backup, simply choose the date you want to restore from. With ATI running in Windows, you can mount the image, just like from the recovery CD, you can simply double click on the tib file to see and copy the files, or you can use the ATI UI to restore selected files and folders from the backup.
