simple question about Acronis True Image Home 2011

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have recently purchased Acronis True Image Home 2011 and I have a question:

I am about to upgrade my system form Windows XP to Windows7 and I wanted to use True Image for backing up the data and the files that are on the drive that holds the operating system.

Does True Image Home 2011 allow for this? I mean can I just back up the drive or partition that holds all the files/data and back them up on an external hard drive and will I be able to access these back ups under my new opderatin system once it's installed? Or will I only ba able to access the back-up under the opderasting system that was in use when I created the back-up?

I hope someone can help me with this.

Thank you in advance,
Lars

Lars,

You can Mount or Explore the backup image of the XP system on the Windows 7 system. As far as TI is concerned, this is no different than if you used the source Windows (XP, in this case).

I would recommend that you create the backup, validate it, and then make sure you can Mount/Explore it from XP before switching to Windows 7. This will let you know if it was created successfully and you can access the files.

Thank you very much for your reply!

To access the back-up files, do I need to have Acronis TI installed?
And what do you mean by 'validate' the backup? How do I do that?

Thanks,
Lars

To Mount or Explore, TI must be installed. Otherwise, you would have to do a restore from the CD (you can select to restore certain files/folders). If you don't have TI installed in XP (and don't plan to), you can skip this. I just recommended it since it lets you know that you can get at your files before you tear things apart. It's also usually easier to Mount/Explore than to restore.

You can validate the backup from TI. The option is located differently in the CD version than the Windows version. You can also select to validate the image immediately after it's created. Right-click on the backup in the list and select to validate. If the backup doesn't show up in the list, you may need to browse for it.

Thanks again!

Well, I do have TI installed now on my XP system and I want to install it on Win7 too once I upgraded the operating system, so it should not be a problem.
I am only a bit concerend since4 I am going from a 32bit operating system to a 64bit one but I hope TI will work in that environment.

It shouldn't be a problem. Windows x64 is supported.
