Simple question - how long approximately?

Thread needs solution

I would like to use the WD edition to clone one 500GB WD5001AALS-00L3B2 Caviar Black to another identical hard drive.

I need to know approximately how long this will take using a pentium duel-core 3.2 GHz with 4GB ram.

Minutes? Hours? Days?

Thank you.

The amount of time will also be controlled by the amount of used space--not the size of the disk. I recently cloned an XP disk which had 60 GB of used space and it took a lttle over an hour.

Strongly, very strongly, urge that you perform a disk option backup to include all partitions before you attempt any cloining procedure. Cloning should be done when booted from the Rescue CD and first boot following the clone should be booted with only the new cloned drive attached.

Cloning Risks:
In theory, there should be no risk to the source drive during cloning as the disk is only read. In practice, however, there has been far too many postings of something going wrong during the process. Sometimes it is the operator choosing the wrong disk and cloning the blank onto the master; other times, the power fails during the process; at other times, the computer freezes and the the drive is lost. Simply stated, why take the risk of cloning when it takes on a few minutes longer to do the restore and the master disk is not even connected.
