Startup Recovery Manager Will not detect external hard disk

Thread needs solution

After a reinstallation of Acronis 2010 True Image Home, neither the bootable CD nor Startup Recovery Manager will detect my external hard drive. Previous installations, of 2009 and 2010, had no problem with this same hardware configuration. I do not know if this is a different build of 2010. This is build 6053. I don't know what the previous build was.

Interestingly, recovery manger was already activated immediately after the installation. I did not have to activate.

I had to use your cleanup utility to remove the previous installation. Acronis appeared in ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS, but there was no uninstall option.

Everything seems to work fine in Windows. I have not tried a recovery yet, but I can write backups to the external hard drive and validate them.

I am running Vista 32-bit, 2.3 GHz AMD Phenom 9650 Quad-Core, 500 GB ST3500418AS [Hard drive] (500.11 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 9VM3VR4B, rev CC37, SMART Status: Healthy, 360 GB free. I have an Iomega 500 GB External Hard Drive. Here is the Belarc printout: ST350082 0AS USB Device [Hard drive] (500.11 GB) -- drive 1, s/n 152D20329000

Hello W. DuPree,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to give you a clear explanation.

Please download ISO image based on ISOLinux from your account under Registered Products and create Acronis bootable disc using third-party software. ISOLINUX Bootable Media is usually more up to date than the Acronis Loader one. This is due to the fact a new version of Acronis Bootable Media is uploaded to the website more frequently than regular product updates are released.

ISOLINUX Bootable Media has several boot parameters that may help overcome possible issues with booting. You can also set a specific VGA resolution in the ISOLINUX media if there an issue with the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Check the following article for more details.

If the ISOLINUX CD works flawless for you, you can update Acronis Startup Recovery Manager in the following way:

Exclude kernel.dat and ramdisk.dat and replace the old ones. The files are located at:

* \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\kernel.dat

* \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\ramdisk.dat

After that reactivate Acronis Startup Recovery Manager and see if the issue remains.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Thanks, Dmitry. I got involved with other things, and did not check this post for awhile. It sat unanswered for so long that I figured no one was going to reply. All of this sounds like it might be a little beyond my ability without help, but I will read through all the articles before I ask any questions. It might take a few days. Since my computer is working okay, I am continuing with my regular tasks, and will work on this in my spare moments.

Thanks again for your help.

The ISO boot disk seems to work okay. I did not actually validate a backup; but it found my external hard drive, found the backup, and went through the process to the "Proceed" step. Then I cancelled.

On the reboot I pushed F11, and Startup Recovery Manger loaded. Now it also seems to work okay. It found the external drive, found the backup, and went through to the "Proceed" step before I cancelled. Of course the ISO boot disk was still in the drive, if that makes any difference.

I'm not sure what you mean by "exclude" the files. When I open or explore the ISO boot disk, it simply brings up an empty space which says, "Drag files here to write them to the CD."

On my hard drive in Program Files I found Kernel.dat and Ramdisk.dat, except that it was Ramdisk_merged.dat.

Anyhow, things seem to be okay now, although I will have to check it out a little more thoroughly. If I have additional problems, should I post back to this thread or start a new thread?

This fix does not quite make sense to me; but if it works, it works. Thanks for your help.

I have Acronis True Image 11 running on Vista. A windows update crashed the computer. The computer would not start, so I had to boot from the Acronis CD. I had a good backup image which I was able to restore, and the computer was working fine for 1 day. I made and validated a new image because I had installed quite a bit of new stuff.

Then not being sure at that time that the windows update had caused the crash, I updated again. One of the latest updates caused it to crash again. I started another restore, and the USB drive with the backup image failed before it finished.

I bought a new USB drive enclosure and put the drive in and tried it. The Restore Data Wizard does not see the backup drive, so I can not choose an archive file to restore.

I can connect the USB drive to other computers in the house and access the files on it with no problem.

I tried some of the other wizards in the True Image Home program run from the CD, and they can see the USB drive. The Activate Acronis Startup Manager even tries to create an Acronis secure zone on it.

If you can, please advise how I can get the Restore Data Wizard to see the backup drive.

Lawrence, you are trespassing on my thread! Never mind, it doesn't bother me; but you probably need to start a new thread. If I knew anything about this stuff, I would answer your question.

Dmitry, things are still a little buggy for me. On the ISO boot disk and in Startup Recovery Manager, the right-click mouse operation gets no response in disk backups. It works fine for file backups.

With disk backups, I can use the "Next" button to go through a disk restore operation, at least to the "Proceed" Step. I have not tested it further. Is there a way to validate a backup without the right-click option?

If you will tell me what you mean by "exclude" files- that is, explain how to replace the old kernel.dat and ramdisk.dat- I will give that a try. I cannot figure out how to find files on the ISO boot disk.
