Suddenly having problems
I am running TI Home 2011 w/Plus Pack on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit machine.
The app was running fine until several days ago when it would error out upon starting. Unfortunately, I did not capture the exact error but it had to do with an invalid handle of some kind. I ran an application repair (from the install menu) and the app would start, but all of the backups were identified as corrupt. Never had that happen before in hundreds of backups.
Uninstalled the app, rebooted, re-installed after downloading the latest version from the web. Now, it loads but when I go to restore a backup, the 'Opening Backup' window pops up with the spinning clock but never opens the backup.
I've tried checking (chkdsk) all the hard drives, checked the smart attributes and backed up to two different drives so I don't think it's a media issue.
When I go to the .tib file I can drill into it and browse it and there doesn't appear to be any issues.
Really stumped as to what next steps ought to be.
Anybody have any other thoughts or troubleshooting ideas? The notion of not having a current backup of my c: drive is not comforting.
Thanks!

Have you considered restoring one of your backups created when things were going correct? If you have a backup which includes all of the partitions on your system disk, then do a disk restore whereby you check the disk as the option to be restored. This should be done when booted from the TI bootable Rescue CD.

Unfortunately, I don't have any system backups available from several days ago as I was out of disk space and deleted them before trying this latest backup.

A few things you might consider.
A backup most certainly should be possible if you boot from the CD and do the backup from the CD.
To get your Windows TI working again:
Restart the 2011 install program (latest build) and after restarting the install, you should get a Repair option. Complete the repair.
On my 2011 setup, I went into services and stopped and disabled the Acronis Non-stop service.
First time, you start a new install, it may spend an extra amount of time looking for your backup tasks and old files. Once it completes the search, start times improve. If it lists non-existent or items you do not want, then use the option to remove all the items from the MyBackup Task display.
If you are using a backup scheme based on dates or disk quota or disk space, I suggest you change to where you keep x number of backup chains as your means of controlling your disk space. The last build of 2011 seems to work well when a custom backup schemes is set to keep a specific x number of backup chains.

I repaired the install and TI starts up fine. I did a disk backup of the c: drive and it appeared to complete with no problem.
However, now when I start the program it says the drive is not backed up yet with the Total: 0 bytes. What's amazing is right below that in the green message bar it says: "The backup has successfully completed (Today at 4:22 PM)."
When I open 'My Computer' the .tib is there, I can explore it, etc.
This is really bugging me as TI worked with no problems for so long.

If the backup that failed validation was part of a diff backup where parts deleted, , the backup is probably ok and not corrupt. This goes back to an age old problem where TI will not successfully validate any diff backup if some of the diff's have been deleted. The failed file will probably restore ok and the missing parts not actually needed for a restore..
Hopefully, some of your backups include all partitions--even those without drive letters.

I just ran another full backup, tried to validate and it said it was corrupt. The backup scheme is 'Custom' with creating a differential after the 1st full backup but I have only run the full backup and that's what I am trying to validate.
Just can't understand why TI would go from NEVER indicating a backup is corrupt and NEVER having a problem restoring backups to now EVERY backup is said to be corrupt and I can't restore them.
This is running TI from within Windows (which is how I've done it for years with no problem). I will try backing up after booting from the bootable CD and report back.

A bad or marginal memory stick can cause this. The validation is highly memory intensive. Your next step troubleshooting would probably be to run memtest all night. Use the forum search feature at the top and search on
memtest
Also this link.

I think it's bad memory. I ran a backup from the bootable CD, verified it, and restored it with no problem. Ran Memtest86 and got some memory errors at the higher range. I have 6gb's of memory and the errors occurred around address 4083.
My thought is that when Windows is loaded and much more memory is used (I tend to keep a lot of browser windows and programs open) that the affected memory was being used and that was causing the verification problems with TI.
Does that sound like plausible?

Yes. Your case of errors in the higher range of the memory is not that rare.
