Sync, how? Requires connecting to Acronis servers??? Why?

Thread needs solution

I just purchased True Image Home 2012 for two primary reasons.

1) network based backup/restore from bootable rescue media (which appears will work fine but is untested yet)
2) data sync between computers.

I purchased the "peer" pack at extra cost to add TIH to my second PC.

Well, when I go into TIH to setup these features I select the Synchronization tab and what do I see? Nothing except for a logon dialog telling me I must log into Acronis to use that feature?

What?

Why in the world would I need to connect to Acronis in order to sync files between MY PCs? I'm not signing up for cloud service, nor will I, I want to sync. Simple.

Am I missing something here or is this really required? No where on the site during the purchase process or in the normal product pages (that a customer would normal browse) does it mention "sync requires an Acronis account and the use of the Acronis web services" (I made that up of course). I find this both misleading and disturbing.

I paid for a backup and sync tool and that's what I expect, not a tool that forces me to provide Acronis information on my PCs and files in order to use the features I paid for (and was not told would require this before purchase!)

Same question from me!
I can find no explanation anywhere about exactly how this feature works. Maybe files are uploaded to Acronis..or is some form of sync data held there?

Yes, when you sync, the sync information is stored on Acronis servers, so that another computer could join the sync later. I personally don't like that a local sync requires some information going out to Acronis servers. I don't know exactly what is the sync metadata contains and how it is protected, but it is not in the clear: it is a long key-like certificate.

Hi,

in the thread "http://forum.acronis.com/forum/24134" are a few Answers to this login requirement from Acronis...you may check them out....

@ PAt L
what i noticed at the time i was trying to get ATI2012 run properly (now i am back to 2011 and i started tu refund for 2012) is:
If you only want to make local syncs the connection to the server was only necessary at the first time i want to use the sync feature .

After that i blocked all communication of syncservice to the internet and I was still able to create and run local sync tasks......surely not intended by acronis ;-).

Bad thing was: i just tried what happens if i wanna invite an other computer in this state and the task was deleted :-o!?!!

It should be not so complicated to change the program in that way, that the login information is only required if you choos the cloud way to sync.

For me the same!!! Why do I need an account just when I want to synchronise local (between PC, laptop and/or NAS). I cannot delete a by myself defined sync ....  The 2012 application hangs often .....

Hi All

I also do not see why I need to login online to do a sync of local to local folders.

Because of this, the sync area is useless to me, as this machine is only online for
short periods of time. :(

Hi,

I agree it is ridiculous to log in with Acronis in order to sync with a local system.
Please Acronis just put in a fix so a local sync will not require a login or data transmission to unknown parties.

Cheers.

That feedback has been given to Acronis. I 100% agree with you.

I also agree!!
Why do we have to have internet connection to sync local files (computers on my home network/router)?
I had been using the free sync built in my windows 7, also tried synctoy (both good) but I had seen the ATIH and thought great both sync and backup automated and user friendly. So I purchased the family pack to sync all files to two computers and a external hard drive. I dont see why the need for internet connection for syncing my files to my computers and frankly it makes me uneasy not knowing what is being uploaded to Acronis or where ever it is. I see the last post that they are aware but that was a month ago and it still NO CHANGE. I may have to return the product untill I find they fix this.
Another thing, in the sync setup wizard it ask (check mark) for Arcronis online stoage or not (cost extra) so if its not checked it shouldnt need an internet connection. Sorry this REALLY BUGS ME.

I have exactly the same problem! I have no interest nor any intention of using any cloud service for data synchronization, be it offered by Acronis or anybody else! I find it completely unacceptable that this log in requirement exists for users who are only interested in synchronization between local media. Moreover there are significant bugs in the synchronization functionality as well. It failed to identify my NAS drive correctly even after drilling down to the folder on the NAS drive for folder synchronization!
I have informed Acronis that I revoke my purchase and asked them to refund, as I find this completely unneccesary/unwanted functionality that should only be 'invoked' if and when a user tries to establish synchronization with a 'cloud drive'.

Hello Willy,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us, we really appreciate it.

I forwarded your comments to our Product Management team so that we can add your suggestions to our software.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

I really don't think much of Aconis. But, they're the only backup software that has exclusions. It seems awfully touchy.

If the process is interrupted by the user or by some sort external event, the old stuff remains on the target backup device. If you try to delete this junk, you screw up the backup and have to remove it and create it again.
