"There is insufficient space in the recovery destination"
I get the above message when I try to recover any of my weekly backups. They're from a 60 GB SSD, the actual data amount is ~35GB. I try to restore them to the disc they came from, or an empty 160 GB drive (formatted/partitioned or not). Still getting that message, even if I select a 750GB drive to test.
I don't understand what is causing this, and found no working solution so far. I tried recovering from the recovery CD, and it tells me "free space in front: 8xxxxxx TB" (!) when it comes to the partition selection. My guess is that for some reason, bad partition size data is stored in the backups (which would also explain why there's not enough space for windows recovery).
If I reset it to 0 or leave it as is, it starts recovery, but aborts after a few minutes just saying "Partition Recovery failed", no further info.

The backup mounts fine and everything looks good. If I manually make a backup on a different HDD, I also get the above message, btw.
Validation works fine, no errors.
Another thing I noticed: If I select "browse for backup", True Image completely locks up ("Not Responding"). I can browse fine for images when selecting them i.e. for mounting, though.

I just tried to recover again and checked the log.. TI claims that the MFT is corrupted. I had run chkdsk just yesterday, the MFT is definitely not corrupted on the HDD, so it would appear that TI is storing a corrupted MFT in the archive somehow.
Any ideas on that?

I am a brand new owner of ATIH2012 and have not had any other Acronis backup software previously. I have had the program for over a month but have just been able to install it. My computer HD is partitioned into Drive C, D, & E plus several other partitions for special data. . As a test I backed up Drive C to an external HD with a partition labeled Acronis. When I then attempted to recover Drive C, a yellow flag was posted that said "There is insufficient space in the recovery destination". The ATIH2012 shows the recovery destination, Disk C, having a size of 48.8 GB which is true. According to Windows XP, Used Space in that partition is 15.1 GB and Free Space is 33.6 GB. According to Windows the Backup File size is 8.2 GB but ATIH gives size as 15 GB. That seems to correspond with observations posted by other users but the actual size of the file and the amount of free space at the destination should not be a size problem for recovery. Because of my lack of diligence in installing and testing the program I am not eligible for live support from Acronis so any help on how to overcome this road block will be greatly appreciated.

Are you doing the recovery from the recovery CD?
Also, if you are new to ACronis, check this post: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/25648

I am getting this same message for ATIH2012 plus pack build 6131. I am doing the recovery from the HDD in the same way I have done many times before. I get the message on every drive I have every if there is 1Tb of extra space. Has anyone worked out what is causing this problem? I am running Win 7 64bit SP1. There are no errors in the backup and I do a verification with each backup.

I would suggest you do the restore from the TI Bootable media Recovery CD and use the TI "Add new disk" option to clear or delete the partitions on the target disk so the target space is unallocated.

I have just encountered the same error when attempting to restore a 23GB size file to a 293GB drive. I have checked the destination drive using chkdsk, etc to no avail. Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem??

Norman,
Are you doing the recovery from the recovery CD?

Hi,
I have the same problem with restoring a backup from a harddisk (320 GB) to a ssd (240 GB OCZ Agility 3) (from boot CD). I can change the partition layout so that all fits on the new size. But at the settings for restoring I can select the ssd, but it shows me at topic "volume size" free space before 8.xxx.xxx.xxx TB and at this settings I can't change any value. If I start now the recovery I get only an error message that it was failed.
Same problem (with boot CD) with cloning this hdd to the ssd: I can change partition layout so that the bigger hdd fits to the ssd, than start, the computer is working some seconds than "Cloning failed".
Restoring the backup file (140 GB partition) to the 240 GB SSD in Windows he says not enough free space. So it is completly impossible to restore this image with the TI 2012.
Can someone help? Acronis itself? Is there an update availible in the near future?
Thanks!
(Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit, ATI 2012 7133)

Uthred,
Since this is a restore issue, you should contact Acronis support. You have the same error as other users, but we have not found a solution.

I realise that there has been a long gap since the last post on this one, but I came across it after having a nightmarish experience in attempting recently to recover an image onto my stand alone system. I had many of the issues cited here, notably the "Tb nnn.nnn.nnn" difficulty which totally blocked any possibility of a recovery. I made numerous attempts, even resorting to a total wipe of my disk. The solution involved NOT trying to restore from the bootable media (created within Acronis TI) but from Windows itself. That could only be achieved following a re-installation of Windows. That of course was only possible after reinitializing the disk, which I had wiped. Here is where the thing becomes a mystery to me. I must have (inadvertently, working on this into the small hours) initialized the disk as GPT, rather than MBR. And then to my utter amazement it recovered successfully. I did not particularly want GPT but I did want my system back, and so I was relieved. What I cannot say is what actually overcame the problems which were insistently repeated whenever I tried to recover from the boot media. The backup was definitely "valid"; I have done similar recoveries fairly often before - always without difficulty. Acronis Chat service (who incidently were very helpful) suggested that the key was attempting to recover from within Windows. I accept their word for it, but do not understand the thinking behind it, since Acronis must of course leave the Windows environment faitly early in the process in order to recover to itself! . I am more inclined to think that the solution was related to the change from MBR to GPT, but again have not the slightest idea why. But there is a related matter, also documented above .....
... Re the "insufficient space on the destination ..." message, I recall reading somewhere that the solution to this was to make the target partition exactly the same as the source - not always as easy to work out as that sounds. I cannot confirm whether that is the case, but would be interested to know if anyone else has any experience of it. If it is, I can only presume that my recovery eventually worked after I had completely wiped the entire drive, and thus it was able to determine its own partition sizes in conformity with the source.
In essence was the solution:
(1) a question of Windows environment - not bootable CD
(2) a question of GPT - not MBR
(3) a question of partition size matching exactly
None of these makes any sense to me, but perhaps someone can shed some light on this. I have lost my confidence, following this experience, in the reliability of the recovery process which I have up to now always relied on.

I just came across this problem and have found a solution... which I guess is the point of the forum.
Failure Mode:
I was using a USB to SATA Dock with the desired restore disk in the SATA Dock. No matter what I did Acronis True Image 2013 would always show "There is insufficient space in the recovery destination" - despite the new disk being 300GB capacity and the image being 1.7GB compressed and an image taken of a 10GB Partition.
- I tried using a VM, with the Bootable CD.
- I tried using a real PC with the Bootable CD.
- I tried using the Desktop Application True Image 2013... all would not let me choose the destination disk while it was plugged in via the USB Dock.
Success Mode & Solution:
I plugged the disk directly into my motherboard SATA socket & power connector. Booted windows (initialised the disk in using Disk Management) and used the Desktop Application True Image 2013 to then successfully restore the MBR & Partition data without a problem!
I hope this saves someone the 3 hours I just wasted.
