Thoroughly confused and frustrated trying to restore using Acronis 2013
Hi - this is going to seem pathetic to some of you, but I'm hoping for help. I am confident with hardware and software but this product (Acronis 2013) has me floored.
I have a Samsung Win 8 64 bit All-in-One PC. I backed up the whole system (a single Samsung 1TB drive). it had several partitions and I backed up the whole disk. These partitions are at the heart of my confusion. There are WinPE partitions, system, Samsung, etc. Total size was about 75gb
I switched the drive to a 256gb Kingston SSD. I used a USB to boot into Acronis. I begin recovery. All well so far. I get to the screen asking me to select "New Location" for the partitions; all; goes well for the first few - I choose Kingston 256gb drive; after about the fourth partition, the Kingston is greyed out and the only choice I have is my source drive!
Argh.
I took a second image of the Samsung drive; this time Acronis shows TWO drives to be recovered, each with partitions. I can recover all of Drive 1, but again, Drive 2 allows me to choose only the source drive - so same as above.
This is crazy. So far as I know, I am doing everything as requested "normally". The Samsung 1TB drive with Win 8 is as standard as can be; my Kingston drive is as standard as can be - but I am stuck, good and proper.
Why on earth is Acronis so difficult to use for me?
Please help. I've looked through various help guides here but they seem so very complicated. Why do I have to choose partitions and locations - why doesn't Acronis simply recover my Samsun disk to the Kingston in One Click?
I'm sorry if I sound frustrated - but this is so annoying.
Thanks!
Steve

Hi again. I decided to clone the Samsung 1TB drive by putting it in a drive caddy and going from there. So far - it's worked. Amazing but my - what a frustrating experience this has been.
People should know that restoring is not at all a straightforward process - unless I am unusual (quite likely!).

An update. All is running well after the clone operation. Win * reported the disk was faulty, which I knew it wasn't, so I ran optimise, etc., and eventually all was well. I had to change the BIOS as the default Samsung will not recognise an SSD for some reason.

I would run chkdsk /r on that disk.
Also run a drive checking utility from the drive manufacturer, as those sometimes catch errors missed by chkdsk.
If you're right that the disk is good, those tests will confirm it.

Hi - thanks. I ran the Windows tool and all was well. I think the errors related somehow to BIOS settings as I hadn't realised the difficulties of UEFI being present on this machine.
I still can't use Samsung recovery as an error message arises "no image found"; and this despite cloning the original disk. I am still not sure why Acronis TI wouldn't let me select locations for the various locations for the partitions - not good as it means I cannot rely on my back up. I read somewhere that TI is not suited to UEFI start up?
Thanks again!
