TI 2010 doesn't backup disk image to NAS

Thread needs solution

For some time I've successfully used TI 11 to backup a full disk image to an external HD. I've now upgraded to TI 2010 and have been attempting to backup a disk image to a NAS unit but found it impossibly slow. After trying various suggested solutions I now read in 'KB 2954: Backing Up a NAS Unit' that 'You can only back up files or folders on a NAS unit. There is no possibility to back up the whole hard disk drive or partitions.' How can it be that TI 2010 fails to perform this central function when the user guide lists networked storage devices under supported storage media?

If you backed up the entire hdisk into a single backup (all partitions), did you try doing a restore of the entire backup rather than singly restoring each partition?

I think the knowledge base article relates refers to backing up a NAS to some other storage device or area.

Although, I've been trying to get system backups to work TO a NAS for months, and it's never worked, so I guess I'll go check out Norton.

There goes fifty bucks down the drain. Gotta love lousy software.

I only have a single partition on my HD. I have successfully recovered this from a backip to an external HD. My problem is I cannot backup to NAS.

Thanks for pointing this out. So that leaves me with software that should work but attempting a 73GB backup to NAS ran for over 12 hours and was still only half completed.

I'm in pretty much the same situation. After reading some of the comments on this forum about support, I'm wondering if a class action lawsuit would be a good idea.

I'm still looking for a solution and turning my attention to the data transfer speed on my network.

Roger Smith,

If you post some information regarding the NAS unit, it may help (brand, model, network connection speed, etc.). Perhaps someone else is using the same unit.

Also, what is your network setup? 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps, running through a hub, switch, router, etc.

If the entire connection between the computer and the NAS isn't 1000Mbps, the performance is probably going to be unacceptable for backups that large.

I'm using MyXerver MX3600 network storage with a BT Home Hub 2.0 and Realtek 802.11b/g wireless adaptor 54Mbps. I'm looking at upgrading to a 270Mbps Netgear Rangemax Next Wireless PCI Adaptor WN311B - not 1000Mbps but is it likely to make a significant difference?

Backing up and restoring over wireless always seems to be more problematic than wired. 270Mbps will be a lot slower than 1000Mbps (and that's assuming you even get close to 270Mbps on wireless).

Thanks for the information and advice.

I may opt for a two-tier backup solution:

- from time-to-time full disk image on external USB HDD (which I keep in a secure location so in the event of fire or theft I wouldn't lose everything)

- daily updated backup of documents, photos, e-mails, etc on the NAS unit (readily available in the event of a problem with my pc)

TIH 2010 does not non-stop backup to network drives as you found out....
I am very disapointed .....poor marketing . The product box says support of NAS drives...
SMB mapped drives as well as ftp support. It does not say Network drives "sometimes" cannot be used ... With this limitation, don't get much bang for buck over TIH 2009.

Work around until Acronis fixes this poor feature enhancement for NAS :
Do non-stop backup to USB drive (or other free partition) then use sync replication software like microsoft sync toy 2.1 or allways sync freeware. Can schedule task to run every 15 minutes (windows scheduler or AT cmd at dos prompt to sync one way to nas . Use at your own risk. It works for me . Once the first full backup copies , will be low network traffic to NAS mirror with the delta files. Sync applications will delete the delta files when consolidated on mirror, and then capture the new aggregate file. C'mon acronis this is simple stuff here !

Hello all,

Let me comment this situation.

Roger, thank you for the suggestions! I will forward them to the responsible person.

Ray, our Non Stop Backup is intended to work with internal drives only, by design. Because it needs to constantly access the destination in order to correctly write the files. But any network connection can reveal some dropouts and packets loss...

Our Acronis True Image Home 2010 does support NAS and network storages for usual backups.

Anyway, I will forward this situation to the responsible team so we will surely consider the implementation in the future.

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Regards,
