TI 2010 Recovery disk produces Backup file about 5 times the expected size

Thread needs solution

In post 6773 I described a problem I was having making Backups with TI2010 under Windows 7 64Bit and was advised that I could use my TI Recovery Disk until a solution was found. I had previously restored a Backup using the disk so proceded to try to make an Image Backup.

A backup was made but it is completely the wrong size. I was backing up a 89.2GB C drive partition containing 28.8GB data, 60.4GB free.

The Backup file produced by TI 2010 is 72GB, and took 45mins to produce on my 2.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo / 4 GB DDR3 RAM laptop. I would expect a Backup file around 14GB taking around 10 - 15 minutes to produce.

I created a partition backup using Windows 7 Image Backup. It was quite slow - some 25 minutes - but created a 14.2 GB file, about what I expected.

I dont currently have any version of TI installed, so cannot examine the contents of the Backup file. So, does anyone have any idea why such a large file is being produced? The physical disk which contains the C drive is 320GB with the 89.2GB C drive, a further 30GB and 20 GB drives and the balance is unallocated space.

TI recognises these partitions and shows only the C Drive 'ticked' for Backup and states 'Size to Back up 28.75GB'. Cdrive Backup Method was set to Full.

I'm waiting for a formal update to TI2010 that works Reliably with Windows 7 and was hoping to use the Recovery disk until then. However, I dont know what the file produced by the Backup contains and am not prepared to try a Restore operation from this file.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Thank you,

Geoff

Hello all,

I completely agree with MudCrab. If there are any file system errors on the drive, the size of the archive file may be significantly increased. So as MudCrab suggested, please check your drives for the errors:

  • Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
  • Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r"

where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

After that please create a new backup and check its size.

Please let me know if the issue still persists.

Thank you.

You may have sector by sector back up enabled. If so, it will copy the whole disk, including blank disk space.
