TIH2011 - Incremental backup keeps failing and can't find last media of the archive

Thread needs solution

1. My scheduled backup has failed and I can’t get it to work. I get the following errors when I press the “Backup now” button on each archive. Clicking retry doesn’t work. The error message just reappears. Clicking cancel just cancels the operation. See the next two screenshots. What do I do to continue this incremental backup chain please? I’d prefer to keep the incremental backup rather than start again. It concerns me that the backups keep failing (see second problem below).

I've attached a log file and a pdf containing the screenshots and descriptions below

2. Aside from the major error above, I have the following ongoing problem that has been happening ever since I purchased the product. I thought I was the cause of the problem initially, but now I’m not sure it’s me. My backups are scheduled to update weekly. I turn on the computer and the external HDD (plugged into the laptop). I enter my username and password. Windows 7 finishes logging in. At this stage TrueImage backup often fails and I have to start them manually. When this happens Acronis either says the backup has failed, or the backup is corrupt. When I restart the backup, Acronis sometimes creates a file with a new name even though it is part of the same chain. For example, the name of the chain changes from D_MyData(1).tib to D_MyData(2).tib (see screenshot below. I have even had D_MyData(3).tib. This causes the restore process to fail. Last time I needed to restore a backup Acronis true image 2011 could not find the first media of the archive. Fortunately I was able to manually rename all the files with (2) and (3) so that they all had (1) in the filename. Why is True Image doing this and how do I prevent it from doing it?

I never had any problems with TrueImage version 10 with WinXP. But, TrueImage 2011 has been a nightmare. I’m pretty disappointed with the ongoing problems I’m having with this version of TrueImage and very dissatisfied. I was honestly looking forward to recommending TIH to friends based on my good experience with version 10, but I can’t recommend this version to anyone at the moment. So can anyone please help me overcome these problems below so that it works smoothly. Thank you.

Thanks for the help everyone.
Andrew

Andrew,

When ATI creates a backup with a number between parentheses, it means it is a new full backup. Never rename a backup file manually if there is a corresponding active task: that will mess up the backup chain.

At this point, you will have to:
- move the archive TIB file that you want to keep to another directory for safekeeping,
- delete the backup tasks

Since you upgraded from v10 to 2011, I would recommend we do a bit of clean up. Uninstall ATI 2011, use the 2011 cleanup utility to remove Acronis remnants, reboot, check that you don't have any Acronis device left in the device manager and reinstall ATI.

- recreate new backup tasks. If you are backing up to a network and you still have issues, try to backup to a local disk to see if the issue remains.

I am experiencing the same issue on a fresh Win7 64 bit build running TIH 2011. I had backups scheduled to run and they seemed to happening but when I was working on the system tonight and the backup kicked off I had the 'This is not the last volume of the backup archive' message pop up. I am backing up to a Windows Home Server that I know is up and running, I can browse to the backup folder without any issues. I have had this happen on my wife's laptop but it was old so I just wrote it off as a windows corruption issue but it is now happening on a new computer.

I need a resolution to this.
