Transfer of IDE boot drive to SATA with WD version

Thread needs solution

I have installed a new Western Digital HD on the PC to replace my old IDE drive. I used the WD version of the Acronis software to clone the disk and set up the new hard disk. The old IDE hard disk is now out of the PC.

The hardware now boots up fine as long as I keep the motherboard settings to IDE. However, if I set the BIOS settings to AHPI the system only gets part way through its boot up and stops. Has anyone any ideas of how to correct this. I have a new fast hard disk and seem to be limitted to my old access rates.

David,

I guess you mean AHCI and not AHPI?

On a regular desktop that doesn't require hotswapping of disks, you won't get much by switching from IDE to AHCI: some improvements in read speeds in some benchmarks, equivalent speeds in write speeds across benchmarks; that means that in real live, you won't see any difference...

Changing from IDE to AHCI requires changes at OS installation time.

This thread seems to indicate you can do some tweaks to enable this change:

Otherwise, you would have to reinstall Windows...
