Transfer to a larger hard drive

Thread needs solution

I use Windows 7, and HP notebook computer, and replaced a 150 GB drive with a 320 GB drive. I used a commercially bought Acronis True Image Home 2010 Bootable CD, which is the original version that they sold a few years ago. I booted up using this CD, and then did a Backup of the original 150 GB drive onto a USB connected drive, and then did a Restore of this backup onto the 320 GB drive. After several times of trying this, and resulting with a flawed copy, I'm wondering whether the Acronis program that I'm using is at fault.

As the copy on the 320 GB drive is booting up, I notice that a driver program for the new 320 GB hard drive is installed from Windows 7. The newly booted up copy seems to work perfectly, except in one important respect. I can not use Windows Update. As I said, I've done this transfer operation (from the 150 GB drive to the 320 GB drive) several times, and every time I have encounter the same problem. Whenever I attempt to perform Windows Update, I get the same message prompt, which is as follows: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I get the same message day after day, and after every time that I use Acronis to transfer the entire contents of the 150 GB drive to the 320 GB drive.

Does it look as if Acronis is not making an accurate Copy? Could the problem we caused by the alternative driver program that is self-installed from Windows 7 when I boot up the copy on the 320 GB drive for the first time? Am I best off to just forget replacing the 150 GB drive with the larger one, and deciding instead to use an externally connected drive or memory stick; i.e., one connected a USB port?
