True Image 2012 UI

Thread needs solution

I recently upgraded from True Image Home 2009 to True Image Home 2012.

In case anyone is keeping count, this user hates the new 2012 UI. The single list of backup files really, really stinks. If you have more than a few backup files, this list becomes totally useless real quick. What was wrong with being able to clearly see/use your backups as job names (one time, scheduled, etc) - instead of Acronis scanning my drives looking for TIB files to display in a iTunes fashion?

BTW, Sync doesn't work now that the free online account has expired. Really? Acronis, I'm not buying yet more online storage - see Google Drive for details. At least the MS SyncToy still works.

How can I check for updates from within Acronis? It's not in "Tools and utilities", so where should I look? Or maybe I should just yank 2012 and re-install 2009. It worked.

Definitely big changes in UI from 2009 to 2012... Hate it or love it...
You still need an Acronis account to use sync, but you don't need a subscription to the online backup or pay anything additional to Acronis to use sync, as long as you don't expect to store content versions on Acronis servers...

In the gear menu of the program, there is a check for update option.

If 2009 was working fine for you, including the recovery CD, you might be fine staying with it. 2012 brings some new features and enhancements, but the core imaging/restore or clone has not dramatically evolved save for driver enhancements and platform support.

Pat,

I could better deal with the single list of files if it wasn't all dumped into one big list from all my drives (3). It borders on ridiculous.

I am signed into the sync account. Nothing syncs even though it's only from drive R to drive S (e.g. local drives only). It stopped working once the free trial stopped. The events seem related.

The gear menu has no "Check for update" option. See attached screen shot.

Ok, I am trying to remember from the top of my head. Maybe in the help menu then?

I am not using sync (I use SyncBack for that). Since sync stores sync set up information on Acronis servers, it wouldn't be surprising that it stops working after the end of the free trial.

You can prevent ATI from scanning for your TIB files. You can find this option in the double gear menu close to the search box, if I am correct. Then you can remove the useless listings (not delete!).

Chris,
Check this lnk to remove the listing and supposedly prevent future recreation of the listing.

Also, check this link
It helps to explain how to create a task with all the new feature of 2011 and 2012.

OK, found the check for updates in the Help menu. Thanks. I thought I looked there before, but...

I'm convinced Sync is busted, and it's busting other portions of the app. For example, if I'm signed in to Acronis Sync, the app correctly saves the state of the display favorites toggle (the little star). If I'm not signed in, the app displays all backups on start. I suppose Acronis stores our app settings online? That seems odd for an app that has to be licensed per machine.

OK, scan for backups is off now. I suppose this was a good idea at some point in the past, but it really stinks the way it's implemented. If you could configure it to scan only specified drives/directories it might be more useful.

This single iTunes style list of backups is really, really annoying. I've got three backup drives - the primary internal is a mirrored set of drives. I also have two external usb 3.0 drives that are used to backup my internal backup drive. In other words, I've got three copies of all my backup files - and I backup multiple times a day, so these files add up quick. What I wind up with in Acronis is a single list, with the same file name repeated three times each - from three different drives. There is no way to organize these files - it's just one list. I can't even sort by drive or in reverse. It's just a big list with a few idiot lights and little control.

As cto of reachpeople.com I recognize the need to simplify a UI for the average user. What I don't understand is why Acronis has chosen to dumb down this once terrific app so that it's basically useless for all but the most simple of backup tasks. How about an "expert" mode Acronis???

Chris,

I agree with you. The scanning of files is not very useful, this is why there was an ask to have the option to turn it off and, to Acronis's credit, they finally added it to 2012.
You can safely remove (not delete) anything listed in the backup list. If you remove an active task, you stop it. You can restore and use anything that has been removed from the list. If you validate something that is not in the list, it will come back to the list. I think that if you consolidate a backup, it comes back to the list as well.
