True Image Home 2010 does not work properly with external HD Western Digital MyBook 3TB USB 2.0
Hello all,
my problem in short terms:
- System: Windows XP SP3
- Want to make a disk image from the internal HD to the external HD Western Digital MyBook (3 TB, USB 2.0)
* External HD is formatted as NTFS
- Boot the system using Acronis boot-media via CD
- Acronis startups properly...
- Problem:
* Acronis recognises the external HD but it is not possible to access or see the content of the external HD (eg. folders)
* When I try to make a disk backup Acronis stops and resumes somethink like "No valid media/volume"
I hope I am not the only one with this kind of problem. I searched the forum, found some related topics regrettably they don´t really match to my problem.
Thank you very much for possible help/answers.
Regards,
Arif

Dear GroverH,
thanks a lot for your quick answer.
@All:
Unfortunately my problem is not solved, Acronis support could not help until now.
I followed http://forum.acronis.com/forum/18772:
- Bought and installed TIH 2010 PP
- Installed drivers for 3 TB HD
- Created new rescue CD
Has anyone an idea?
TIH 2011 PP does work with 3 TB HD - I tried it out on another computer.

Arif

I too have Acronis True Image Home 10 with PLUS PACK and a Western Digital 3TB Drive.
I can tell you now that it doesn't work!!
I've......
Installed TIH 2010 and rebooted
Installed the PLUS PACK and rebooted
Re-created the Boot Media
Started off a backup and it says that the file name or destination is invalid.
The drive is detected and given a letter, but it can't write to the drive.
I've even tried re-setting up the drive as a 2TB drive, but that doesn't work either.
Other than upgrading what else can I do to make this work??

Did you try to partition your big drive in partitions smaller than 2TB?

important, too, I think, is the need for partitions identified in the mbr to start below that 2tb (or whatever) "boundary". But don't know for sure.

Why should I have to? That doesn't make sense.
The plus pack is suppose to support GPT Discs.
Update: I'm trying out splitting it in three 1T partitions. However, I want a proper solution that works out of the box as intended.

Luke,
I am not sure this will fix this issue. If you partition with smaller than 2TB partitions, with an MBR, your disk is still a GPT disk.
I assume you tested your CD with another regular backup disk to make sure you are not facing a disk controller driver issue.
Unfortunately, since your problem is with the recovery CD, your only aternative is to try a newer version of ATI

Yes, I'm wrong, Pat's right - the prob would be with the mbr indicating a greater number than the Linux kern is designed for, even if no partition is extant. I know the kern changed from TIH2010 to TIH2011, but I do not know about TIH2010PP... The Linux kern is the guts of the recover disk.

I'll let you know how I get on with the three 1T Partitions.
PS: Need to find out more about the WinPE section, as I'm familiar with WinPE itself.

OK,,
The three NTFS partitions didn't work
Noticed that the sizing was 4K and read somewhere that Acronis doesn't support 4K clusters.
Formatted them as 16K 32K and 64K with no luck.
Removed all volumes and made the disc an MBR Basic disk and made a 1TB partition and formatted using defaults.
This time, I got to start making the image and then it fell over and said that it couldn't write to the drive with the same errors everyone gets.
Any other suggestions?

Luke,
I am running out of ideas.
Is the disk working normally with ATI in Windows? In Windows, did you disable any Western Digital software? Many of them have this Virtual CD thing. I am not sure turning it off or on changes something on the disk itself, but who knows...
The only thing I would try from the CD is another USB disk no larger than 2GB, even a small flash drive, to verify that your problem is really the disk.

Works in Windows.
I did see the linux portion say something about an error but it's on the screen for one second.
If you're running out of ideas, perhaps I should get my money back as your product doesn't work?
Will try backing up to another disk to make sure it's all kosher.

I'm not using any software that comes with the drive.
Not using ATI in Windows either. I only do bare metal backups and restores

Just to clarify, this is not my product. I am not an employee of Acronis either.
This forum is frequented by users and is hosted by Acronis. I am just another user, like you. , and you try the recommendations of other users at your own risk.
Sometimes, Acronis employees drop in on the threads but there is no service level agreement.
To get official product support, you have to contact Acronis.

Thanks Pat L.
I've cleaned the disk using DiskPart
Created a partition Extended
Created a Partition logical
Formatted the partition and also made the partition under 2TB.
Checked and found that the drive was definitely a MBR style disc.
This time ATI was quicker at assigning letters but still gave the usual errors regarding the name format / destination.
So, guess that means there's nothing wrong with having a 3TB Partition or one that is a GPT disc.

Bump.
Running a backup to a 320GB Drive using a USB - SATA Cable doover. Running nicely.

Has anyone else solved the mystery?
I reckon it's something to do with the Linux loader it uses.

Luke,
Did the WinPE-based recovery see the disk normally?

I'm new to this "GPT vs MBR" question myself, and you may have become an expert now Luke, but this tutorial caught my eye and I wondered if there might be any clues in here for you:

Did anyone ever figure this out?
Windows 7 Pro SP1 (64bit)
Acronis True Image home 2010 - build 7160 (latest)
Running a full partition backup of C: from Windows to D: (another normal internal HDD) ... Acronis locks up or crashes while either configuring the backup or during it.
... Whenever the WD MyBook 3tb is just connected to the computer. I'm not even backing up to it. If I dis-connect the WD-3tb, everything works fine. Windows is stable and works fine otherwise. The WD-3tb drive also works fine in Windows. Even though it's not involved in the backup, Acronis doesn't like the WD-3tb USB-3 drive connected to the NEC usb3 interface for some reason. This is the first time I have ever seen Acronis crash but it's very repeatable.
It's the only usb-3 device I have so I can't try a different one (to see if it's usb-3 devices in general) or if it's because it's over 2-tb.
Acronis ... can you please look into this and patch ATIH-2010 .

Hello Vince,
I regret to inform you that Acronis True Image Home 2010 is a very outdated product, it's no longer updated, supported or developed. In such situation I can only advise you to test the latest version Acronis True Image Home 2012. It's demo version is valid for 30 days, and full functional except the limitations listed here.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!
Thank you.

Vince,
Before you install 2012, make sure to have a backup of your system (without your 3TB disk connected, it looks like :-) so that you can return to a known state if, for any reason, you end up having issues with 2012.
