true Image Home 2010 - Nonstop backup failure

Near bl**dy disaster - following an application crash which lost all data for a project (luckily had a manual copy) found that Nonstop backup was locked in "starting", inspection of backup location shows no backups taken since this morning (12 hours or so). problem may have been caused by USB connector to HDD being disconnected (and replace within the hour).
Entering via main TI Home says Nonstop is off (task bar icon says its on). If Nonstop turned on in TI Home then "Processing: Retrieving nonstop backup information, please wait.." - after 10 minutes I'd waited long enough.
Short of wiping the backup location and restarting nonstop how to I recover to working backups?
