True Image Home 2011 error

I'm running True Image Home 2011 under Windows 7 64 running in a virtualbox.
When trying to open a tib image, TI throws an error dialog:
"Failed to open the volume with number 1"
"Error occurred while reading the file"

The tib image is on an external USB unit, but shared inside Virtualbox as a network share

What can I try?

I have tried to create a backup in a tib file on the primary disk and it works. Could the USB/network attached device be a problem?
