Truecrypt volumes

Thread needs solution

The actual version of True Image 2013+ (April 2013) is unable to backup an NTFS-volume mounted by Truecrypt. Is that correct? Anyone knows why?

To my knowledge True Image cannot image mounted Truecrypt disks, it can image single files but not complete disks. The disk needs to be unmounted to allow TI to work and then reencrypted afterwards.

Sure, I can backup the files on that volume. But one advantage of backing a whole volume is that you can mount it afterwards. According to my understanding the mounted truecrypt volume is a "Volume" by windows standards. I would like to understand why acronis true image doesn't treat it as such.

Oskar,

Because Truecrypt encrypts the drive, the reordering of bits on the fly means that True Image cannot reliably make an image that is recoverable. This is due to the fact Acronis use sector changes and locks sectors in RAM when it is imaging, Truecrypt not only makes the RAM based sector information out of date but also the actual sectors themselves are changed during the imaging process, coupled with the fact that when Truecrypt looks up its table of encoding after an image restore (used sectors are not always placed back in the same order they were in at image time) the encoding information will be incorrect, so your your drive contents will not be readable.

Sorry to ask again (Nonstop Backup / Truecrypt drive / version 2013 build 6514):

If I use other Tools from competitors (e.g. Genie9) I can make Timeline (aka Nonstop) Backups.
So, Acronis is not able to make a file by file Nonstop Backup?
Even if I mount the HDD it's not possible to activate a Nonstop Backup? My understanding is that the Nonstop backup is file based and not sector based.

Thanks for clarification.
