TrueImage 8.0 restore over network does not boot - MBR & BOOT.INI repairs solve the problem
I am using TrueImage 8.0 and BartPE to save and restore archives over a gigabit Ethernet network. For those who haven't used BartPE, and want to enable network connectivity from the BartPE bootable CD-ROM, use this link for details - http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/help/english/drivers.htm. After I saved my archive image to a network drive, I installed a brand new, unpartitioned hard disk. I then booted from the BartPE bootable CD. I selected the appropriate network .INF file from the INF directory and changed the PC Name and the Workgroup in the BartPE Network Configurator. I then clicked the "GO" button, selected "System," then selected "Storage," then selected "Acronis True Image" (NOTE - You must enable the Acronis Plug-in in BartPE when you create your BartPE .ISO file). I was then able to establish a connection to the network drive where the TrueImage 8.0 backup archive was stored.
I restored the TrueImage archive over the netywork without any problem. I re-booted the PC and all I got was a flashing cursor. After reading several posts on the Acronis forums I decided that the Master Boot Record and/or the BOOT.INI file might not have installed correctly. So, following the advice on this forum, I booted using the Windows XP installation CD, and entered the Recovery Console by pressing the "R" key when asked if I wanted to Repair my installation of Windows XP. Once I was at the Recovery Console command line prompt I typed the following command:
fixmbr
I answered "Yes" to replacing the MBR. Then I typed the following command:
fixboot
I answered "Yes" to replace the BOOT.INI file. I exited the Recovery Console, removed the Windows XP installation CD, and re-booted. My backed-up Windows XP installation booted perfectly! Everything was recognized and I was back in business. If you have had the "blinking cursor problem" after restoring a TrueImage 8.0 archive, this may solve your problem.
Good Luck,
