Try and Decide caused boot failure

Thread needs solution

For the first time I attempted use of "Try and Decide" for installation of a program. TI 11 wanted to create a partition. I did so on another drive in my system. (I have 2 SATA drives installed, both bootable to Win XP Home.)

What I attempted was installation of the newer version of a program without uninstalling the prior version. Although I suspected doing this would be a problem, I wanted to test Try & Decide.

The installation failed about half way through. I then cancelled it in TI and rebooted. On reboot I got the following message: "Verifying VMI pool data" where it hung up. After about a minute I shut down and reconfigured things to boot to the other drive with the new partition on it. It happened successfully.

I next reattempted booting to the original drive - same results; it hung up on "Verifying VMI pool data". I then unplugged the drive onto which the "Try and Decide" partition resided and was able to successfully boot the system.

Reconnecting the offending drive I decided to give "Verifying VMI pool data" more time. After about 5 minutes another message appeared "Nonsystem disk - Press any key". I did that and after about 2 minutes the system started to boot, but agonizingly slowly (about 5 minutes).

After that I repeated the above with the same results.

Next, using Disk Director I deleted the contents of the partition that "Try and Decide" created, then rebooted. It rebooted normally.

What did I do wrong?

Initially I thought that the hive had been corrupted. TI has been configured to make daily backups of the system state. Booting from a CD I attempted to restore the system state. It would't do it. Checking through this forum I discovered that TI will not restore the system state. Not only is doing a backup of the system state a complete waste, but it imparts a false sense of security! My only comment to Acronis's explanation is, Huh, why create a backup that no use?

Hi,

Please tell me where is the partition that Try and Decide created? What is it called?

I know that it may not be the same on my computer, but at least it will give me a starting point to search from.

Many Thanks.
Royston Tin.

Hello Royston,

I have found the similar thread from you in other part of forum, so let me assist you with this situation.

To resolve the boot issue, you should repair MBR on Windows 7 (the instructions are the same as for Vista):

Please repair Vista Boot Configuration Data in the following way:
1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the CD\DVD disc drive, and then (re)start the computer;
2. Press a key when you are prompted;
3. Select language, time, currency, keyboard or input method, and then click Next;
4. Click Repair your computer;
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next;
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt;
7. Type the following:
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot

If you want to completely rebuild Boot Configuration Data, then you should issue the following command:
Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
This command scans all disks for installations that are compatible with Windows Vista. Additionally, this option lets you select the installations that you want to add to the Boot Configuration Data store.

Also, we have the special article for this procedure.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you.
