I have never used Try & Decide before, I was trying to use it for the first time tonight.

It fails with the above error.

It links me to a knowledgebase article that says that one of two services are not started or they have the wrong permissions.

I have verified that both services:
Acronis Nonstop Backup Service
Acronis Scheduler2 Service

...are both running correctly and are running as "SYSTEM".

I am NOT using Bitlocker or any drive encyrption software of any kind. All my volumes are NTFS.

I am running Acronis True Image Home 2010 build 7,046.

My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have all the latest patches installed for this operating system.

Why does this function not work?

Chris,

Have you installed TI for all users or just yourself?

Does everything else in 2010 work correctly?

On the Try and Decide setup, does it show any warnings?

Do you have enough free space?

Is the T&D location your C: partition or another partition or drive?

Does your screen look similar to the screenshot attached? Note this is using VM version of Vista rather than W7 as I ahven't installed a W7 VM yet.

>>Have you installed TI for all users or just yourself?

I do not remember. I most likely chose the default, whatever that is. How do I tell?

>>Does everything else in 2010 work correctly?

Everything ELSE I have tried works fine, but I've only done system and daily backups of all my drives, haven't really tried anything else.

>>On the Try and Decide setup, does it show any warnings?

Yes... see screens below.

>>Do you have enough free space?

There is about a terabyte free on the drive I'm activating it on (S:) Incidentally, drive S is the same drive that I save my acronis backups to, and that works fine.

>>Is the T&D location your C: partition or another partition or drive?

Drive S:, an external SATAII drive.

>>Does your screen look similar to the screenshot attached? Note this is using VM version of Vista rather than W7 as I ahven't installed a W7 VM yet.

I have attached my own screenshots with what mine looks like.

Screen1 is the try and decide screen before I start it.
Screen2 is the try and decide screen after I hit the "Click to start" button.
Screen3 is the try and decide screen after I click OK on the warning in screen 2.
Screen4 is the try and decide screen error that pops up.
Screen5 is my hard drive structure.

The default install is All Users. You can tell the install type by checking the ROAMING folder under your logon name.

C:\Users\Logon_name\AppData\Roaming\Acronis if that folder only appears here then it is a 'you only' logon, if the folder also appears in 'All Users' it is installed for all users.

Assuming that the T&D driver isn't corrupted for a moment, some things to try.

1. Only protect the system partition - does it now spring into life.

2. Temporarily make the system partition (C:\ drive) or another internal drive the T&D location - ditto

Do you have Windows VSS enabled or BitLocker or any other program that tracks registry or disk changes which might be preventing T&D from starting?

I tried option #1: "Only protect the system partition - does it now spring into life. "

This worked. See screen1.jpg.

I didn't try option #2 since it doesn't seem relevant now.

>>Do you have Windows VSS enabled or BitLocker or any other program that tracks registry or disk changes which might be preventing T&D from starting?

Bitlocker is not being used on my machine. Regarding Windows VSS I am not sure what you mean. If you're talking about the Volume Shadow Copy service that is set to manual on my machine and isn't currently running. I think it runs when I run windows native backup though. (I only do that on-demand and rarely, it isn't scheduled to run automatically)

I just install all my programs onto drive D to prevent drive C from filling up.

The reason I wanted to do the T&D is because I was installing Office 2010 and wanted to make sure the upgrade went ok. The program files go onto my D drive.

So why doesn't this work when I include my D drive in the protected partitions? Most everything I have installed (after the operating system) is on the D drive.

Oh and regarding your other question it appears to be installed only under my roaming folder, there is NOT an acronis folder under C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming

Unrelated to this thread, but you mentioned Office 2010, for which I have a warning: Backup and archive your Outlook PST files before installing Office 2010. And if you happen to use OneNote, reverting back to 2007 will be a problem. Trying Office 2010 was one of the bigger mistakes I made - I did not have True Image at the time. Proceed with caution! The uninstall of Office 2010 is not complete.

Gary: I installed 2010 (not the beta but the full version) last night and it went off perfectly. I guess I got lucky.

I use OneNote and Outlook extensively - both are working great under 2010.

Thanks for the warning though.

The installation or 2010 was fine. Reverting to Office 2007 was the problem.

Chris, have you run chkdsk on your D partition?

Yes. No errors. I actually run chkdsk on all my drives at least once a week.

Colin I think I answered all your questions, any ideas?

The Try and Decide application fails to start even when I log on as an administrator. How can I activate it for all users? and what can I do to solve thw problem?

what OS, version and build of TI and what is the error message you get?

OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. Build of TI is 7046 and the error message is "Failed to start Try&Decide" Event code: 0x00970021
