UI issues or features of the Recover Files UI?

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I am trying to see how I could use recover a file in the event of a loss and am having some issues with the Recover Files UI (Select files and folders to recover). I've looked in the help and have provided some feedback to Acronis but am none the wiser or happier. Here are my issues; all assistance will be appreciated.

I am using Acronis True Image 2015 build 6525 on a Windows 8.1 PC laptop with a standard mouse and a non-touch screen display at 1366 x 768 resolution.

a) Is there a way to change the widths of the "Acronis" and "My Backups" columns or to collapse them when not needed to be seen - these seem to me to be fixed and jointly occupy about 40% of the width of my screen before I can get to the bit that is suppose to enable me to recover a file.

b) Is there a way of configuring the overall fonts and spacing used in the UI? These seem to be rather large for a non-touch screen and rather wasteful of space.

c) Is there a way of accessing horizontal scroll bar for the folder tree pane in the third "Select files and folders to recover" column? Once I get to more than 3 folders deep I cannot see the lower level folders without resizing the sub column width at the expense of then not seeing the constituent files. Even so, I am limited in the depths to which I can descend. At no point does a horizontal scroll bar present itself.

d) I cannot access the vertical scroll bar in the files pane of the third column at all. Whenever I mouse near it the cursor changes to the resize window form for the whole UI and all can do is resize the whole window. Thus I cannot see more than a page of files.

e) I cannot get the wheel of my simple mouse to work with the UI nor any of the Pg Up and Pg Dn keyboard operations. See d) above.

f) More generally, is there a way of searching for a particular file or pattern of files? I was expecting some form of search facility but have yet to find one.

g) And again, more generally, once a file or folder is selected, is there any way of seeing the known versions or latest backup times for the particular file/folder?

Sorry if all these are known issues - happy to be pointed in the right direction. However, if that's the way it's supposed to work, and I need a touch screen of higher resolution to operate the UI then I think this should be a clearly defined requirement.

Kind regards, Stefan

Progress! Not sure what I did but the mouse wheel and keyboard shortcuts are now working in the panes in the final column, so please scratch e) above and the final part of d). Still can't scroll the folder tree in the horizontal direction though.

Hi Stefan, thanks for elaborate feedback

a) The width of sidebar and backup panel will automatically collapse if you try to reduce True Image window. In your case (1366x768) it is recommended to use application in maximised mode. This will also fix the issue with vertical scrollbar in file browser.

b) What you can do here is to check scaling in windows screen resolution settings (right click on desktop >screen resolution > Make text larger or smaller). It is better to set scaling at 100% in your case.

с) You can make folders tree wider by dragging divider to the right - see screenshot in attach.

d) This is a known issue–could be fixed be going to maximised window mode

f) We are planning to add file search into recovery in one of the next updates

g) Yes, there is a Versions dropdown list on the top right corner of file recovery dialog. It shows when the backup version which contains the file was created

Hi Andrey,

Thank you for your reply. I've tried out the various suggestions you've made and made a few notes (below). I'm not sure what you meant that my feedback was elaborate - I had hoped it would be useful to you for future improvements, if nothing else to the help, and perhaps to others experiencing the same issues.

Sorry I've been a while acknowledging your response. I've been struggling with some weird interference between a non-stop backup and a periodic backup job resulting in the loss of the names of the backup jobs (eventually resolved by removing the non-stop job and editing the periodic backup name with help from your colleagues).

Here are the notes I made:

a) I've not managed to make the backup panel automatically collapse when I reduce the size of the True Image. Whilst the tool sidebar does, the backup one doesn't. Sadly, the solution you proposed to my issue is self-defeating though as at the same time, the overall area of the recovery pane is reduced correspondingly. It would be better if you could log a suggestion to have a manual collapse function added to the UI.

b) I'm not keen to affect the text size for my laptop. This would reduce the text size for all applications and so far it's only True Image with which I am having UI issues. Again, some acknowledgement to logging an issue about the usability of the UI would be better. I also suggest you get your systems engineers to test the product on the range of screens that your customers may have rather than perhaps the large screens they may have on their desks.

c) I had found that I could make the folders tree wider by dragging the divider - but even so it's limited and once you get to a certain depth (perhaps 5 folders) you cannot see further and at no point does a horizontal scrollbar appear. I have noticed however that a horizontal scrollbar does appear on the files column so it shouldn't be impossible to fix this for the folders tree.

d) Thank you for the note about maximising the window. This works and I am able to access the files scrollbar with the mouse. Luckily my keyboard Pg Up/Dn functions now work so I dont need to rely on this fix but it's useful know.

f) I look forward to the future updates you mention. I would hope that you will provide facilities to see what's been changed in a given time period as well as just searching for a file by name. Do you have any specification for the proposed search facilities you are considering introducing?

g) Thank you for pointing out the way to find versions. Another suggestion I'd like to make would be to make to see if it is possible to make this available in a column in the files panel - these seem to be fixed and it doesn't seem possible to include other metadata about the files.

Kind regards, Stefan
