Unable to create a backup of Document and Settings

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I downloadded and purchased TIA 2010 and updated to Build 6029.

I was able to create a system state backup and a Full HD Image with no problems, however if I try to create a backup up of the documents and setting folder the program crashes.
This is what widows reported:

In Windows 7, "Documents and Settings" is a directory junction, not a folder. The real folder is called "Users". Have you tried backing up "Users"?

However, the program should not crash - this isn't good.

lol thanks Mark,

I feel like a right plank.... Not been using W7 long :s.

seems to be ok now... But yeah should not crash like that.

This is a really confusing feature that Microsoft put in Vista and kept in Win 7 and is one of the things that frustrates users. Why let the "folder" be shown at all if it cannot be accessed by the user!

The folder doesn't normally show in Windows. You can only see the junction "Documents and Settings" if you enable viewing of both hidden files and folders and also protected operating system files.

Symlinks and directory junctions are features from Linux. They are very powerful and it's good to see Windows copying these features. With directory junctions you can give a folder multiple names (for example, Users and Documents and Settings). Vista and Win 7 did this because they wanted to rename the user folder to Users while still maintaining backwards compatibility with older programs that were coded to store files in the Documents and Settings folder.

Ah I see, I'm viewing "hidden files" on purpose because I wanted to dual boot W7 and XP using EasyBCD (it copies xp files to the C: to do this so I wanted to make sure it was doing correctly), now thats done maybe I should hide "hidden files" :D

Thanks for help
Darren

Darren:

Hiding "Protected Operating System Files" should be sufficient.
