Unable to delete restored file

Thread needs solution

Hello, I backed up my desktop computer (Windows XP Home) with True Image. Then I restored some files onto a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. The files I restored were in my "My Documents" folder on the XP machine and I restored them to the "My Documents" folder on the Windows 7 machine.

I am not unable to delete the files I restored. I get a message saying I do not have permission. The account I am using on Windows 7 is an administrator account. Any idea on what I can do to delete the files? Any additional information I should provide here?

Thanks,
David

Hello David,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for posting. I will certainly help you with resolving this issue.

It is caused by ownership and security rights. Please try the following to get it resolved:

1. Right click on the file/folder that cannot be deleted -> Properties -> Click on Security Tab - > Click on Edit button -> Check "Full Control".

2. Click advanced -> enable the option "Replace permission entries for child objects" and hit OK until all dialogs are closed.

3. If you have full control already -> Advanced -> Owner -> Select existing user -> enable "Replace owner on subcontainers" option -> and press Ok.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your response. In number 1 above, "Full Control" was already checked. And it is greyed out, so I am unable to uncheck it if I wanted to.

When I tried number 3 above, I got a message saying I was unable to proceed because I do not have permission.

Hello David,

Thank you for the follow-up and you are most welcome.

In this case, please try the following workaround and I really appreciate if you could get back to me in case of additional issues:

Properties -> Security -> Advanced -> Owner -> Edit -> Change to yourself -> Apply -> Check Full Control which should become available.

Thank you.

Awesome, that did the trick. Thanks for all the help.
