Unable to restore files: Cannot find version XX

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have been using Acronis for years to back stuff up and have never really had to use it until now and I am pulling out my hair because I cannot recover any of my files.

I have all the backups on a single external USB drive. They are incremental backups with an initial full backup and the 46 incremental backups.

I select the last incremental backup and get the error "Cannot find version 7". I have searched the board and cannot find a solution that works so I can recover my missing files (I don't want the entire volume, just select files since I have fully re-installed Windows 7 on my laptop).

What am I supposed to point to, to answer the question about finding "version 7"? I just want to extract some files in my backup and keep getting stuck.

David

I see you are using TI 2013, not TI 2015. At any rate I take it you are attempting to recover from the last incremental backup which would be number 46 in the chain. Looking at you acronis1.jpg this would be file DP_X240_inc_b1_s7_v1.tib of 04/28/2014. Please note that on 05/05/2014 another DP_X240_inc_b1_s7_v1-2.tib was created which indicates that version 7 of the chain was split for some reason into to 2 backups. In your acronis2.jpg you have the ability to Browse for the backup file, you should try that and point to the version 7 backup file. If it were me I would point the app to the one created on 04/28/2014. If that does not work try the 05/05/2014 file.

You have seen the results of using incremental backups that being, that if one inc. file in the chain becomes lost, deleted, corrupted all future or following inc backups become unusable. Thus it is best practice to keep the total number of inc. backups to a minimum. With automatic cleanup rules you can limit this number by specifying total number of versions so that the application will create a new full backup once that number is reached followed again by the specified number of incremental versions.

Well that is helpful and depressing at the same time. So after trying a dozen times, I have come to the conclusion that by backups for the past 2 years have been useless. Sad that Acronis puts out a product with a default setting that results in having useless backups when you need them.
