Unable to use boot disk to restore or make backups

Thread needs solution

Using TI Home 2010 I cannot use the boot CD to make or restore backups. The odd thing is that it DID work at one time, now it won't and I haven't changed anything on the system. I even made yet another boot CD and that one fails as well, with a message that says " Can't read from sector 0 on disk 2" or words to that effect.

If I use the install CD and boot from that I get a similar message OR when asked to browse to a location for the backup TI locks up when I hit the BROWSE button and just sits there with my HD running continuously.

When I boot to Windows of course THEN the external drive is recognized. I can't overstate how upset I am with this nonsense, this is NOT my idea of a RELIABLE BACKUP this is misery.

What in the heck is going on with this?

Thank you,

F Wolf

The EXACT message I get is " FAILED TO READ FROM SECTOR 0 of Hard Disk 0" RETRY IGNORE IGNORE ALL CANCEL

I ended up using a USB cable instead of the eSata and that seemed to work but of course isn't an answer. The backup and restore worked fine prior to today using the eSata, now it won't. TI doesn't even recognize the drive is there but Windows does. It takes forever when you choose BROWSE to decide where you want the backup put. Fast it ain't.

I don't know if anyone is following all this but I have more news in hopes SOMEONE can help me.

I tried to make yet another boot CD this time using the iso that is called TRUEIMAGE_MULTIPARAM_ etc. This one failed to work as well, it still refuses to see my drive.

However in desperation I used the INSTALL CD and ran it in SAFE MODE............. this worked! But the question is why does it see my external drive plugged into an eSata connection? Of course USB won't work there are no drivers for it if you choose SAFE MODE. Furthermore why even make a bootable CD if you can boot off the install disc?

Why is there no SAFE MODE on the boot-able CDs that Acronis wants us to make? I understand that the older versions allowed you to make a SAFE MODE disk and a FULL disk.

My problem remains I cannot use ANY of the bootable CD's to make or restore backups using the eSata connection. It worked until yesterday and now it won't work at all. If I use a USB connection I can make and restore backups that way OR if I use Safe MODE from the installation CD I can use the eSata. Doesn't anyone have an idea what is wrong?

Thank you,

Where are the Acronis people while I troubleshoot this software? Seems nonsensical to me that TI would work fine and then just quit will all sorts of errors. Dmitry, Ilya where are you??

" FAILED TO READ FROM SECTOR 0 of Hard Disk 0"

This error sounds like a hard drive issue. Have you run CHKDSK on this drive?

Yes I have already done that, and reading the CHKDSK logs revealed there ARE no bad sectors. The drive is new just like the 1TB external drive, doesn't mean it can't fail but it's fine.

Furthermore, if I had bad sectors like the message indicates I would be getting them all the time no matter what method I chose to make or restore a backup. That isn't the case. If I use the installation CD and boot from that and use SAFE MODE, I can see my external drive and all the archives just fine and get no errors. In addition to that if I use a USB connection rather than eSata to the external drive I don't get that "Failed to read blah blah message" either.

The fact is as I have stated prior to this that none of the rescue disks I have made, all 5 of them don't work now. but they did before. I have re-installed Acronis and it's update with no success. I've also made 2 of the 5 using .iso files neither of which worked.

I have 2 choices :

1/ Use a USB (slow) connection to the Iomega 1TB drive.
2/ Boot from the install CD in safe mode

It worked before using the eSata why won't it work now?

I was sent a program called Acronis Info, that .zip file log has been sent to Tech support to have them study it.

Thanks for your reply!
