Universal Restore from HDD To Smaller SSD

Thread needs solution

So I do a full backup online inside W7 of a 1TB HDD...Boot to the rescue media and try a Universal Restore to a 240GB SSD..the backup image is stored on a 1TB USB External...

...I add New Disk and the SSD is seen as unallocated...

...I get prompted for the System Reserve from the backup first...No problem adding this to the new SSD, partition 2-1

...Next try and add Partition C and the SSD shows the leftover unallocated space, but it is greyed out...

...Now I was able to see this the FIRST TIME I tried to do this whole operation...the SSD disk was brand spanking new....but I aborted the operation because I wasn't totally sure what I was doing...since then I when I try and redo the operation, the Partition C space targeted for the leftover unallocated space after I set the System Reserve is greyed out....

Any suggestions??

Universal restore is not necessary when restoring a backup to a new drive. See this link http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618 for a PDF file that describes the process you need. See Item 1 in the link posted.

Seriously??? 35 pages of this to do what should be the simplest of tasks???

Not impressed with this...

Did you do a full disk backup? If so just restore the entire image assuming your new SSD has been installed correctly. Start at page 29 as it says in the instructions by GroverH. The guide covers several possible scenarios. The author is a well respected MVP on this forum and has published numerous tips and hints for several versions of TI.

yes it was a full backup...Figure 28 at page 16 of 35 is where the problem is ...when I go to do the main system partition, everything is greyed out...The System Reserve is able to be recovered, but when I go to do the main C drive, the remainder of the unallocated space is not selectable...

...this is what happens when I select Universal Restore option, anyways....I'll try it without that option, but I think I may already have...

...I just did a Clone Disk from one SSD to another SSD of the same specs, different make...worked like a charm...

..I'm wondering if I need to cleanse that SSD drive and wipe everything out hard-core

...I'll double-check, but there may be a hidden FAT32 partition on the source drive that is partition 1...The System Reserve partition is labeled as 2-1, but IF it and the C drive were the only partitions, it shouldn't be 2-1, it should be 1-1

Why are you selecting the universal restore option? Its not needed for replacing a hard drive only if you replace the motherboard. Repeat the process with out selecting universal restore and you should be OK.

yeah...the documentation says to use UR if restoring to any new hardware, but in hindsight that really doesn't mean much if you're using the same system but different HD...

...it appears you have to do the restore of each partition, in order, one at a time before proceeding...So thanx for the doc's, it took some monkey'ing around but I am currently restoring the system drive after restoring the System Reserve first....once that's done it's the MBR and we'll see what happens...it's weird but I was able to do it all without having to do each partition restore individually the very first time...I did a disk cleanse, maybe that helped, I dunno...I doubt it...being a unix guy I always just scoffed at windows partitioning, but once I just got it back down to basics things look ok so far

...I'm not all that up-to-speed on SSD drives, but I am assuming there will be no difference between MBR and the boot sector between the SSD and the analog disk...

...I'll be pretty happy to get rid of that old grinding "spindle and platter" sound for good...

Glad things are going in the right direction. Grover's Guides are linked along the right margin of this forum

...done...minor little hiccup that required a Windows Repair from the install disc, but that took 2 secs and had something to do with the Startup process...

..thanx Thomas!

I got a TI from Crucial... It never allows me to select the SSD.
I moved all data from my old HDD to USB HDD and shrunk the partition. Finally made sure C drive along with the other system partions fit into the size of my SSD.
Then it worked like a charm. I think its just the size issue where traditional HDDs are much bigger than SSDs.
