Upgrading a laptop SSD drive

Thread needs solution

Hi

We have a Asus Laptop with an M2 512Gb SSD drive, which is running out of space (I don't have any other computers with this i/f.)

We have bought a 2Tb drive to upgrade it.

Can I use an external portable drive to take a backup image of the current drive, with TIH. Then (this is the difficult bit). I need to boot from TIH from (say) a memory stick, so I can run TIH again to restore the image,  which by then will be fitted in the laptop.

Is there a sequence of actions that will allow me to do this? My fail-safe method is too "recover" the 2TB which will give me bootable machine.

Over time I would manually be able tget it back to now by restoring the data and reinstalling all the apps, but I really want to avoid having to do this.

Jon, welcome to these User Forums.

What actual version of Acronis True Image do you have?  You have posted in the 2015 Forum but is this the version you have?

My reason for asking is that it is unlikely the ATI 2015 Rescue Media will have support for your M.2 SSD drive, especially if it is NVMe, as support for this only came in the later versions (2017 up).

What type of drive is your new 2TB drive, is that also M.2 or is it a standard SATA drive?

You may wish to consider upgrading to the ATI 2018 version, or alternatively, joining the ATI 2019 Beta trial which will let you get a taste of what is coming up.

Hi Steve

Thanks for responding to my post. I have Acronis True-image Home 2015. It sounds like I do need a newer version to support the rescue media boot. I will try joining the Beta trial as it will be interesting to see the new version in action and to work with rescue media.

The new drive is arriving today, so I will probably have a go at this tomorrow evening. Apparently, there is a football (soccer) match on this evening and being English -  I might be distracted.

Regards

Jon

Jon, I would recommend making a full backup of your computer with ATI 2015 before taking part in the ATI 2019 Beta - this would give you a way back in case anything goes untowards.  Also, given you are on 2015, you will need to uninstall it first before installing 2019, so make a note of any of your important backup tasks you may have set up.

We will also be watching that football match this evening and hoping that England can do as France did last night and get to the first World Cup final in a very long time!  We too are English!
