USB media does not work with Windows 8

Thread needs solution

I created a USB boot drive with True Image 2013 program that is installed on
my computer.

The ATIH2013_en-US.iso file that was downloaded and is working with a CD has
one directory "Recovery Manager". I copied all the files from the IOS image
into my USB. I did it twice one time to the Recovery Manager directory on
the USB and second time to the root of the USB.

I can boot my computer with this USB. If I select full disk backup, the
drive and the partitions are not
displayed. However at the bottom of the screen it tells that there are 101GB
to be saved. This is the correct number. You can press next and go to the
next screen create a backup file of the two partitions that were
automatically selected but you cannot see them on the screen and you cannot
select the other three partitions. The other thing you cannot do is type a
backup file name. You can generate automatic file name.

In other words the software can see all my disks properly. The software will
create a backup of the default partitions. But the area that normally
displays the partition tree is BLANK. This is either a bug in your program
or a intentional limitation not to allow booting from USB.

My hard disk is basic (not dynamic). The utility to convert ISO to USB
creates a USB that will not boot at all.

Build 6514 of True Image 2013 Rescue Media has issues displaying the GPT partitioned disks found in many newer systems.

You will need to contact Acronis support to obtain a newer build of the ISO file.

There is no charge for recovery issues. (The inability to see GPT disks - from the Rescue Media - qualifies as a recovery issue)

My question is about USB. I have the latest ISO file from last week. The ISO works with CD.
The USB works except for displaying the partition data. I can do a backup even if no partition is displayed on the screen.
I can backup and restore using CD and USB rescue media. I cannot see the partition table displayed on the screen.
Obviously the Acronis True Image can read and write to my GPT disk. I cannot display the result.

The ISO is used for CD/DVD creation.

The normal method to create bootable USB Flash Recue Media is from True Image running in Windows.

Please check the version and build numbers of your existing CD and Flash Rescue Media and see if they are the same. (Boot to each one and check the build number in the About True Image item.)

You can not copy the files from the ISO directly to the USB Flash drive to update an existing copy of the USB Flash Rescue Media to a newer version.

If you have obtained a newer version (newer than build 6514) of the ISO file, it can only be used to create a CD/DVD.

Is it possible to create USB rescue media that works with Windows 8 GPT disk?

The ISO file for CD/DVD is working fine. Why Acronis will not do the same for USB?

I can copy the ISO files to the USB drive. I copy it both to the Recovery Manager and to the root. It works in every respect except for displaying the partitions in disk backup. It can display the partitions in every other mode of operation. The actual backup and recovery are working.

Uzi,

I use RMPrep to prepare my USB sticks to be recognised as a hard drive and then with Grub installed, boot the True Image recovery ISO, that way everytime there is a new build I just replace or add another ISO to the USB stick.

This won't of itself solve the GPT problem that the current recovery build has, but, it would make using and updating various builds and versions much easier.

There are other utilities that will prepare USB sticks to be recognised as hard drives such as the HP USB and Microsoft utility, Grub as a boot loader is the main system for booting ISOs, there are others around as well.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for your suggestion, I will try it.

I would appreciate if you explain to me why creating a USB with Acronis True Image 2013 and copying the files from the ISO is not a nice simple way to do it. The ISO is working perfectly from a CD. In other words the software on the CD knows how to work with GPT. This software appears twice on the USB, in the root and within the Recovery Manager folder. It actually works except for the partition display on disk backup. The backup itself is ok. The drawback is that you cannot select additional partitions. And you cannot create your own name. You have to use the default.

Thanks again for your help. I was not familiar with RMPrep and Grub. As I was searching the internet I found out that I can use an old SanDisk Micro Cruzer 2GB U3 stick. I downloaded u3-tool.exe program. With this program I created a CD partition larger than the ATIH2013_en-US.iso file and copied this file into the CD partition. Now I have a USB stick that looks like a CD for the boot program in my computer. It works just fine.
