Use of Drive Notify with TIH 2012

Thread needs solution

From reading the description of MudCrab's Drive Notify, I think it will do what I want, but I would appreciate it if some knowledgeable person confirmed.

Here's the scenario: User has a Windows 7 Pro laptop on which I will install TIH 2012. Backups (partition backups) will be made on an external USB-attached hard drive (NOT a flash drive).

Because Windows does not consider USB hard drives to be "removable," the "Run when the current destination device is attached" option is NOT available in the Advanced Settings for scheduling backups.

Let's say that I set up a backup schedule to do an incremental partition backup every night at 2:00 a.m.

There are 3 possibilities for what happens:

1. The laptop is on (perhaps sleeping) and the USB hard drive is connected. In this case, TIH2012 can be configured to wake the laptop (if necessary) and perform the backup.

2. The laptop is powered off and the USB hard drive is connected. In this case, TIH 2012 can be configured ("Run at system startup") to perform the backup as soon as the laptop is powered on.

3. The USB hard drive is not connected. If the laptop is powered on (and Drive Notifiy is running), at 2:00 a.m. TIH 2012 wakes up the laptop, starts to perform the backup, and Drive Notify displays a message to connect the external drive. If the laptop is not powered on at 2:00 a.m., then as soon as the laptop is powered on the next morning, TIH 2012 attempts to start the backup (as in #2), and Drive Notify (which must be started before TIH 2012 is started) displays its message.

Have I described things correctly?

Hello Pete,

Thank you for your post.

You asked if your 3 ideas are described correctly. Let me answer your questions.

  1. You are right, if the machine sleeps or is in hibernate and the USB HDD drive is connected, you can choose the wake up option to wake up the machine for your backup.
  2. You are right here. Use the Schedule - Upon event - System startup.
  3. For this operation, you may take a look in to this section of Online Help. At the advanced settings part, you find the settings for working with USB changeable media.

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Thanks for the response.

For some reason, when I looked at the "Advanced Settings" for my backup schedule when I was using a Western Digital My Book as my backup device, I didn't see the option to "Run when the current device is attached."  I have changed my backup device -- it is now a standard SATA hard drive in a StarTech external enclosure -- and now the option is there.  This seems very strange.  The My Book should have been treated exactly the same as my current external drive.  Perhaps I was just looking in the wrong place.

I do note that the help file focuses on flash drives, which is why I thought I had to use Drive Notify with an external hard drive.

If you schedule a backup to a USB flash drive or validation of a backup that is located on a USB flash drive, one more check box appears: Run when the current destination device is attached. Selecting the check box will let you perform a missed operation when the USB flash drive is attached if it was disconnected at the scheduled time.

The next paragraph in the help file is a little more general:

If you want to regularly back up data located on a removable media (for example USB flash drive) or remote storage (for example network folder or NAS), we recommend that you select the Run when the current source device is attached check box. This is useful because an external storage device may be often unavailable at the scheduled moment of backup. In that case, if the check box is selected, the missed backup operation will start when the device is connected or attached.
