Using universal boot media with Acronis True image 2015

Thread needs solution

When using the universal boot media with true image 2015 I get an error that states i'm using a trial version and it wont continue ..... I chatted with acronis and all I got was there is a known issue with that problem

Hello Mark,

yes, it is a known issue indeed and our development is working on the fix.

In the meanwhile as a workaround you need to create two bootable media:

1) In Acronis Media Builder with Acronis True Image only

2) in Universal Boot Media Builder with Acronis Universal Boot.

Thank you.

A known issue?
Do you have comnunicated about this issue to your customers to avoid they lose their time for your known issues?
Today i lost 1 working day for this issue before understanding that isn't a my problem but Acronis developing team problem!
Very Very disappointed!

Hello Mauro,

I'm very sorry to that it caused you so much trouble.

Please find here a related article in our knowledge base.

Thank you.

The 1st time I opened Tools/Acronis Universal Restore, I was prompted to download and install Acronis Universal Boot Media Builder which I did. Everything seemed to proceed as expected but I still get the same menu when I open Tools/Acronis Universal Restore. I can't figure out how to create the Universal Boot Media.

Acronis Universal Boot Media Builder installed in C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Acronis\UniversalBoot. True Image 2015 is in C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome. I am running W8.1

Look in the All Programs start menu under Acronis. You should see an entry to Run Universal Boot Media Builder. If it is not there, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\UniversalBoot and double click UniversalBoot.exe.

Thanks, Enchantech!
But,
AcronisTrueImage2015_ur_en-US.msi did not install a UniversalRestore folder and therefore no executable. It installed UniversalBoot but there are no executable. I have unstalled the UniversalBoot, re-downloaded the file using the link described in my previous message and re-installed with the same results. It looks like I am not being directed to the proper download location or I am not installing it correctly???
Charlie

Hey Mustang!

There is no UniversalBoot.exe When I search (W8.1) for UniversalBoot.exe there are "no results found..."

Thanks,

Charlie

Charlie,

Go to the Acronis Support site link at top of this page. Login to your account and then on left side of page click on My Products and Downloads. Expand your product listing for Universal Restore to access the download link for the Universal executable file. You will also see a tab titled Documentation that if clicked on will allow for downloading the documentation for Universal Restore.

Download both to your computer, run the executable to install the app., read the documentation for usage of the product.

Thanks for your help Enchantech,

I followed your instructions to the letter. The download is an .msi file with the same size as the other two I have downloaded today. When I double left clicked there were 3 options - Modify, Repair or Uninstall - I uninstalled and double left clicked the msi file again. This time a Wizard led me through the installation without any apparent errors (exactly like the other two times today). The same thing happened as I described in my first contact above.

I am thinking about uninstalling True Image 2015 and reinstalling - anything else I can try?

Thanks,

Charlie

Enchantech and Mustang,

I just repeated this process on a second computer running W7 and got identical results.

Charlie

Charlie,

Do you see a file named WinPE64.zip at C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\UniversalBoot\WinPE? If you do, follow the guide at https://forum.acronis.com/forum/71918 .

Where are your Common Program Files (x86) located. Open a command prompt and enter "set" without the quotes. Look in the list and see what folder is next to CommonProgramFiles(x86). Look in that folder for a subfolder called \Acronis\UniversalBoot. If it is not there something has gone wrong with the install.

Mustang, Thanks for the help!!

I apologize for not knowing about CommonProgramFiles(x86)! UniversalBoot.exe is there but I could not make a CD initially using it so I tried https://forum.acronis.com/forum/71918

"Holy Crap Batman, er ah Mustang!!" that looked daunting at first but I plowed through it and burned a CD from the iso!!

Then I opened Acronis True Image 2015 Tools/Acronis Universal Restore, and I am still prompted to download and install Acronis Universal Boot Media Builder (although I have)!! That menu gives no other option but Cancel or Download.

When I tried UniversalBoot.exe again I was able to make it all the way to the CD. Its total size is larger than yours although the content "looks" the same. I didn't "inject" any drivers into the WinPE media UniversalBoot.exe created.

Bottom line:
I have two different ways of making two different CDs with no way of conveniently trying to see if either will boot to different hardware.
Acronis True Image 2015 is not "working" as advertised.

Any recommendations?

Thanks again for your help!!

Charlie

Charlie,

Glad you got MustangPE to work. You should boot your computer with the CD and test to make sure that Acronis Universal Boot runs successfully. This is as far as I have gone with it. I haven't tested to see if it will inject drives into a Windows restored to different hardware. All my computers have the same motherboard.

Don't worry about TI 2015 still asking you to download. This is a program bug Acronis needs to fix. The WinPE CD you made from UniversalBoot.exe will most likely NOT work. When you boot a computer with the disk, it will try to run the Universal Boot program. You will get an error message stating the Acronis Managed Machine Service (MMS) did not start. You should make the CD again, but this time select the default Linux configuration. The Linux CD should boot and run successfully.
