Utilization of Hard Drive During Backup

Thread needs solution

I have been getting low disk warnings on my hard drive (desktop c:\drive).   Last time this happened, I cleared up a bit of space and was thinking about re-installing all my software.  The next day, half my c:\ drive had about 40% free capacity.  Slapped my forehead with the palm of my hand and went to back to work thinking that windows cleaned up something when I rebooted.  I got another warning today (several actually).  This time I noticed acronis running in my system tray about ( 80% complete)  I can't tell right now whether it is backing up to my USB drive or to the Acronis Cloud. 

Does Acronis create temp files on the hard drive being back up as it is doing it's thing?   If so, can I mitigate?  If not, how can I figure out what is bloating.  It isn't obvious to me when do disk clean up (win7) and search windows explorer?

Jon, welcome to these user forums.

Acronis should not be writing any backup data directly to your C:\ drive when a backup is running, but with ATIH 2015 and later, it uses the Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) to create snapshots of the data being backed up, which will be stored on the C:\ partition.  The amount of space being used by VSS is normally the same as assigned by Windows System Protection AFAIK, so you could start by checking what value you have configured for System Protection in the Windows 7 settings - this is also used for System Restore points and is expressed as a percentage of the drive space.

If VSS is the reason why your C: drive is reporting as being low on disk space, then this is only a temporary condition and the space should be freed once the backup task has completed.

I let the Acronis job complete and it didn't release space on my local drive.  I did, however, delete restore points in the Win & System Protection area and a miracle occured and I got my HD back!   I turned off VSS in the job control script you mentioned in your suggest and reduced the amount of size that VSS can sieze.   I will monitor but so for it looks like you had the magic.  Thank you, Jon
