When doing a Restore Acronis changes the date and time

Thread needs solution

Using Windows Vista Ultimate, SP2, 32bit on an Intel machine with 4GB Ram and Explorer 8. Acronis True Image Home 2009, build 9796.

This morning, October 7, 2009, I looked at My Computer Backup2 which was created at 4:00:01 AM, as shown in the two Screen Shots below. I validated this FullBackup using Windows and using the Rescue Boot CD. Notice on both screens below that October 7, 2009 was the date that these were created, and validated.

I decided to RESTORE this Archive Image of October 7, 2009. I always do a Restore using the Rescue Boot CD, not windows. I am using one hard drive rack with two caddies. One hard drive is used as the main hard drive, and the other hard drive is kept in reserve and a Backup Image is restored to it. After the restore is finished the reserve disk is now the main drive, and the old main drive is now the reserve hard drive. These two hard drives are rotated every time I do a Restore operation.

When I started the Restore operation this morning, it showed this information in regards to the Backup Archive for October 7, 2009:

Archive: FullBackup2(8) Number of backups 1
Created: 10/6/09 11:00:07 PM Size: 26.330 MB
Last Update: 10/6/09 11:00:07 PM Type: Disk backup

You’ll notice that there is a discrepancy between the dates, and time, provided by the original FullBackup and the dates, and time, provided when I start a Restore (see attachments). This happens everytime I do a Restore. I feel that the Restore is probably alright. I can access all my drives using it, as far as I can tell everything works just like it did before, but there is something nagging me, making me think that there is something wrong. Did the FullBackup revert to the day before, and showing only the hard drive from that date and time, or is this just a quirk of Acronis True Image Home. I had this same problem when I was using build 9709, and that is why I went to build 9796, hoping that it would have a configuration that would have eliminated the above problem.

In Acronis Knowledge Base 1762: Restoring Backup Files Preserving the Original Date and Time, in the introduction, it states “When restoring a backup archive, Acronis True Image sets the current date and time to the recovered files. You can make Acronis True Image preserve the original date and time of the restored files by changing an option in the additional settings.” It then goes on to tell you a solution for the problem. However my problem is different, the Restore process is changing the date back to the day before, and about 5 hours earlier. If anyone has had this problem, and has a solution, I would like to hear from them.

If nobody knows of a solution, do you know if this is just a quirk and my Restored Backup Image is working properly?

I believe, but can't confirm it at the moment, that restoring from the Rescue Media reports the date and time using GMT/UTC.

Is your computer date/time correct?

I'm looking at the Date/Time in the lower right-hand corner of my screen as I type this. The day is Wednesday, 107/2009, time is 3:51 PM.

You are right, I am in the CDT. All my FullBackups are scheduled to start at 4:00 AM, as shown on the attachments.

Looking at your images it appears that the backup started at the correct time. What's not clear is why the validate is several hours later. Perhaps you did this step manually.

I edited my previous posting to correct an error. Being on CDT your local time would be GMT/UTC minus 5 hours.

I believe this came up by somebody in the past. It sounds like an incorrect calculation in the Rescue Media CD.

Your computer clock is correct. I'm on CDT also (Minnesota).

Bruce, I really appreciate your efforts. You are always methodical and intuitive. I am going to do more research in regards to this problem, and if I come up with an answer I will post it here. By the way, I"m in Texas. I came up to your state a few years ago to hunt grouse and woodcock and had a very good time.

You are correct, I do alll my validations, whether in Windows or using the Rescue Boot CD, manually.

Bruce,

You were dead on about the GMT.

I found information at the following sites, the first one is the most relevant.

For those that would like to see other threads, go to Wilders and search for Greenwich Time.

The http://kb.acronis.com/content/1762 presents a different screen than my screen.
The attachment below shows what my screen looks like when I go to additional settings.

In the Acronis True Image Home 2009 User's Guide that I have, they discuss these additional settings on page 60, item number 6.4.5.

For a little different look at this problem I am showing some notes taken when I was working on this problem and using build 9709.

NOTES ON PROBLEMS USING
ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE HOME 2009, BUILD 9709

August 11, 2009 MyBackup (46) validated in Windows. Here are the stats:

Created: 8/11/09 4:10:23 AM
Last update: 8/11/09 4:10:23 AM
Number of backups: 1
Size: 25.587 MB
Type: Disk backup
It also validated using the Rescue Boot CD, showing the same date and time.

Using the Boot CD, I swapped the current Disk 1 to the replacement disk, Disk 3. When I did this it changed the date and time as below:
Created: 8/10/09 11:00:09 PM
Last update: 8/1/0//09 11:00:09 PM
Number of backups: 1
Size: 25.587 MB
Type: Disk backup
Still using the Boot CD, the file validated and also validated a restore.

Still using the Boot CD. When I go to the Manage and Restore screen the list of image archives that I see are only those that were on the replacement disk, Disk 3, (36) through (42). I have to go to Browse for backup to obtain the latest archive. When I click on the latest backup shown, (42), the date and time are correct. However, when I go to Browse for backup, the image archives shown there also show the correct time and date, but if I select one of these, (43) through (46), when it appears on the Manage and Restore screen the date will be one day earlier that the archive and the time will be wrong.

I chose number (46) the backup from 4:00 AM this morning and the date is 08/10/09 instead of 08/11/09. I went ahead and validated this, with the Boot CD, and then restored it, and it was successful.

The last day I restored is located on Drive F:\ and shows the correct time and date. When I bring it to the Manage and Restore page it shows the changed date and time.
