Which product(s) will do this?

Thread needs solution

My 88 year old dad has a Dell 4600c (~2004) that has a dead motherboard. He does not want to switch operating systems(XP) or computers for that matter) at this stage in his life. The IDE drive from the 4600c is still good, we have hooked it up as an external drive and his 'stuff' is still on there. He wants to be able to recognize all of his 'stuff' and programs. Here's my question; can we install one or more of the Acronis products on a newer XP machine then somehow transfer his OS and along with it, his programs and their files?(remember we now have his old drive hooked up as an external) Can we transfer from one version of XP to the newer machine if it's different version of XP?

Yes, you can. You need Acronis True Image and the Plus Pack to do a universal restore. Since you don't change the OS, here is the method:
- install 2013 AND the plus pack on the newer XP machine, and create a full disk and partition backup. All partitions should be included in the back. Refer to Grover's user guides if you are not familiar with Acronis. This way you can restore your newer computer if things fail.
- create an Acronis recovery CD
- copy the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder of the newer computer to a USB stick or disk that will be available when you do the restore
- boot the new computer on the recovery CD. Verify that you can launch ATI, use your mouse and keyboard, see your disks,
- do a full disk and partition backup of the OLDER disk to some USB disk. Can be the same as the one you copied the driver folder to.
- shut down the computer, disconnect the older disk, leave the USB disk(s)/Drive(s) where you have the backup of the old disk and the driver folder
- reboot the computer on the recovery CD and select restore entire disk, check the universal restore option. It if is greyed out, there is a problem with the backup of your OLDER disk.
- if you are not familiar with ATI, read the guides before proceeding
- restore the image of the OLDER disk to the newer disk. Restore the entire disk includlng all partitions and the MBR+Track0.
- ATI will ask you to point to the folder where you have the drivers of the newer computer
- the restore should complete successfully
- reboot the computer normally. It should not blue screen, but if might take several passes to install secondary drivers.

Good luck!
